This week, we continued our inquiry into transportation. We reviewed the features of transportation and discussed the different places we go using transportation in our daily lives.
Students shared their ideas and demonstrated their understanding using cardboard box transportation. They pretended to travel to places they wanted to go, such as the supermarket, Disneyland, and the park. Through these demonstrations, students showed that they understand transportation helps make our lives more comfortable and convenient.
今週も交通機関についての探究を続けました。いろいろな乗り物の特徴を振り返って、いつもの生活で乗り物を使って行くいろいろな場所について話し合いました。子どもたちはお手製の車/電車/飛行機を使って、スーパーやディズニーランド、公園など、行きたい場所へ行くまねっこをしました。これを見て、子どもたちは乗り物が私たちの生活をよりよく、便利にしていることを理解しました😊
For example, moms go to the supermarket to buy food, and because groceries can be heavy, we use transportation to carry them. Going to Disneyland is far and takes a long time, so we use a car or train to travel. Going to the park is also quite a distance, so we take the bus to get there faster.
After watching their friends’ demonstrations, students were asked to think about places they want to go and how they would get there. They practiced using the sentence structure:
“I go to / I went to the __________ by __________.”
Some examples included:
“I go to the park by bus.”
“I went to Disneyland by car.”
例えば、お母さんは食べ物を買うためにスーパーマーケットに行きます。食料品は重いので、運ぶために乗り物を使います。ディズニーランドは遠いので、車や電車で行きます。公園もけっこう遠いので、早く着くためにバスを使います。
友達の実演を見た後、子どもたちは自分が行きたい場所とそこへの行き方を考えました。
「私は○○に○○で行きます／行きました。」
例：「バスで公園に行きます。」「車でディズニーランドに行きました。」
They then represented their understanding through drawings, illustrating the destinations they chose and the modes of transportation used. This activity supported students in making connections between transportation and real-life experiences while developing their thinking skills.
その後、行く/行った場所と利用する乗り物を絵に描き、理解を深めました。この活動は、交通機関と目的地とのつながりを理解するのに役立ちました。
Setsubun is a traditional Japanese event that marks the beginning of spring. On this day, people throw roasted soybeans to chase away bad luck and welcome good fortune. The beans are usually thrown at someone wearing an oni (ogre) mask, while saying a phrase that means “Out with bad luck, in with good luck.”
In preparation for the upcoming Setsubun celebration, Ms. Kumi read a story that explained the meaning of Setsubun and why people throw beans during the celebration.
節分は春の始まりを告げる日本の伝統行事です。この日、人々は厄払いと幸運を招くために豆を撒きます。鬼の仮面を被った人に豆を投げながら「鬼は外！福は内！」という掛け声をかけますね。まず始めに、節分の紙芝居を読み、鬼の話をしました。病気やケガ、または好き嫌い鬼、寝坊助鬼？みんなはどんな鬼をやっつけたい？
After the story, the children made their own ogre mask craft. They chose different colors for the hair and for the lens of the mask. Through cutting, crumpling paper for the hair, and gluing, they developed and strengthened their fine motor skills. Once finished, they proudly put on their masks and looked at themselves, enjoying the experience of becoming an “oni”.
Well done, Aurora! It was wonderful to see the children learning about culture while building creativity.
そしてみんなで鬼のお面を作りました。お面、頭、つの、髪の毛とレンズは自分の好きな色を選び、つのをはさみで切ったり、髪の毛はお花紙を丸めてくしゃくしゃにしたり、のりで貼ったり。たくさんの作業を通して、細かい運動能力を育みました。たくさんの工程を終え完成すると、誇らしげにお面をつけ、鏡に映った自分を見て「鬼」になって楽しみました。カラーナイロンのレンズから見る世界は？青！赤！黄色！緑！
頑張ったね、オーロラさん！創造性を育みながら日本の文化についても学ぶことができました😊
Joy in the snow!
It snowed last night, and this morning the students arrived at school bursting with excitement, shouting, “I can see the snow outside!” They were thrilled at the chance to play in the yard, so before our music lesson, we made time for them to enjoy the snow—even if only for a short while.
The children looked so happy as they changed into their snow gear and eagerly got ready to play. They had a blast making snowballs, enjoying a friendly snowball fight, and swinging on the net dusted with snow. Laughter filled the yard as they moved, played, and kept their bodies warm. Most of all, they freely expressed their joy and feelings through outdoor play, making it a truly special winter moment to remember. ❄️⛄
雪が降った翌日、子どもたちは「外に雪が見える！」と興奮気味に登園してきました。園庭で遊ぶことにワクワクのオーロラさん達だったので、ミュージックレッスンの前に、少しの時間でしたが雪を楽しみました！雪遊びの服を着て、早く外に行きたいと準備する子どもたちの笑顔はキラキラしていました。雪玉を作って投げ合ったり、雪の積もったネットを揺らして頭の上に雪を降らせる姿は最高に楽しそう！動き回り、遊び、体を温めながら、園庭は笑い声でいっぱいでした😊何よりも、戸外遊びを通じて自由に喜びや感情を表現する姿は、忘れられない特別な冬のひとときとなりました❄️⛄
Exploring while playing
Aurora’s play area has become even more exciting as children learn through play! As part of our IB unit on Transportation, we transformed the space using cardboard vehicles and road signs to spark curiosity and imagination.
The students loved putting on driver costumes and stepping into their roles as drivers, passengers, and traffic helpers. We invited them to share their ideas on how to play and discussed what different road signs mean, encouraging them to think, ask questions, and express their opinions.
Through this hands-on experience, learning felt natural and fun. The children practiced communication, cooperation, and problem-solving while connecting their play to real-life situations they see every day🚦🚗✨
オーロラさんのプレイルームが、遊びを通して学べるさらにワクワクな空間に生まれ変わりました！探究の活動のテーマ「交通機関」にちなんでいくつかの乗り物や横断歩道を取り入れ、好奇心と想像力をかき立てています。子どもたちは運転手、警察官、消防隊員などの衣装を着て、なりきって遊びました。遊び方のアイデアを伝え合いながら、いろいろな道路標識の意味について考える力、質問する力、意見を伝える力を育んでいきます。この実践的な体験を通じて、学びは自然で楽しいものとなりました。子どもたちはコミュニケーション、協力、問題解決を実践しながら、遊びを日常で目にするもの🚦🚗✨と結びつけていました。
Gym Day Fun!
The students kept their bodies warm and their energy high by running around, chasing friends, and enjoying activities together. Laughter and excitement filled the gym as they moved, played, and practiced teamwork with their friends.
ジムレッスンでは、縄跳びを色々な跳び方でとび越えました。音を立てないようにそーっと跳んだり、片足で跳んだり、1本目は飛び越えて2本目はくぐったりしました。お友達と一緒に活動を楽しみ、体を温めて元気いっぱいでした🎵
