Hello everyone!
This week, we began Unit 4: “Celebrations.” To spark curiosity, the teacher surprised the Shooting Star students with balloons and asked, “When do you see balloons?” The students excitedly shared their ideas: “When we have a birthday party!” “At Christmas!” “On Valentine’s Day!”
We then sang our introduction song from the Sports Festival, “Celebrate Good Times, Come On! It’s a Celebration!” The guessing game ended when one student confidently announced, “It’s a celebration!” Shortly after, we discussed what the students celebrated this month which is the New Year and they happily shared how they celebrated with their families.
今週、私たちはユニット4「Celebrations（お祝い）」を始めました。新しいユニットのヒントとしてサプライズで風船を用意し、「風船はどんなときに見る？」と問いかけました。すると子どもたちは、「お誕生日パーティーのとき！」「クリスマス！」「バレンタインデー！」と、元気いっぱいに答えてくれました。
その後、スポーツフェスティバルで使った曲「Celebrate Good Times, Come On! It’s a Celebration!」をみんなで歌いました。クイズ形式のユニットを当てる活動は、ある子が自信満々に「お祝いだよ！」と答えて、見事正解。続いて、今月子どもたちが何をお祝いしたかについて話し合い、新年を家族とどのようにお祝いしたのかを、嬉しそうに共有してくれました。
To continue the celebration, the Milky Way and Shooting Star students came together to enjoy traditional Japanese New Year games such as kendama, karuta, koma, and fukuwarai. The Milky Way students showed great care and kindness by helping the Shooting Star students read the karuta cards and wrap the strings around the spinning tops. Laughter filled the room as everyone played fukuwarai and created funny faces. We also enjoyed lunch and playtime together, making it a truly wonderful and memorable experience. We hope to have more opportunities for collaborative play with other classes in the future.
お祝いを続けるために、ミルキーウェイクラスのお友達と一緒に、けん玉、かるた、こま、福笑いなどの日本の伝統的なお正月遊びを楽しみました。ミルキーウェイの子どもたちは、かるたを読むのを手伝ったり、こまにひもを巻いてあげたりと、シューティングスターのお友達に優しく思いやりをもって接してくれました。福笑いでは、面白い顔ができあがり、部屋中が笑い声に包まれました。昼食や自由遊びの時間も一緒に過ごし、とても素敵で心に残るひとときとなりました。これからも、他のクラスと一緒に遊ぶ機会をたくさん作っていきたいと思います。
The next day, we explored our Central Idea:
“Celebrations around the world help people come together and feel happy.”
The students reflected on questions such as What is a celebration? Who do you celebrate with? How and why do you celebrate? Their ideas were thoughtful and joyful: celebrations are about having fun, being with family and friends, playing games, eating lots of food, and feeling happy. They shared that we celebrate because it makes us happy.

「世界中のさまざまなお祝いは、人々を結びつけ、幸せな気持ちにしてくれる」
について探究しました。
子どもたちは、「お祝いとは何かな？」「誰とお祝いするの？」「どのように、そしてなぜお祝いするの？」といった問いについて振り返りました。出てきた考えは、どれも思慮深く、喜びにあふれていました。お祝いとは、楽しい時間を過ごすこと、家族や友だちと一緒にいること、ゲームをしたり、たくさん食べたり、そして幸せな気持ちになることだと話してくれました。また、「お祝いは私たちを幸せにしてくれるからするんだよ」と、自分たちの言葉で共有してくれました。
To assess their understanding of Japanese celebrations, students walked around the classroom, observed photos displayed on the tables, and shared what they noticed. They were able to name several celebrations and talk about their own experiences. This week, our main focus was Japanese New Year. Ms. Ayako introduced various New Year objects, and the students did an excellent job naming them. They were very familiar with kagami mochi, otoshidama, nengajo, and osechi, and eagerly shared their experiences with each one. They also listened to a story and learned why people decorate shimenawa and kagami mochi during the New Year.
日本のお祝いについての理解を確認するために、子どもたちは教室内を歩き回り、テーブルに並べられた写真を観察しながら、気づいたことを共有しました。いくつかのお祝いの名前を挙げることができ、自分自身の体験についても話すことができました。
今週の主なテーマは「日本のお正月」でした。Ms.Ayakoがさまざまなお正月のアイテムを紹介すると、子どもたちはとても上手に名前を答えていました。鏡餅、お年玉、年賀状、おせち料理には特に親しみがあり、それぞれについて自分の経験を嬉しそうに話してくれました。また、お話を聞きながら、なぜお正月にしめ縄や鏡餅を飾るのかについても学びました。
In addition to classroom learning, the Shooting Star students were especially happy this week because they visited Shonai Park twice. Since we did not have gym lessons, we took the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air, nature, and beautiful weather. The students loved flying kites in the wide open space and spent plenty of time running around and playing on the playground. It was a fun and refreshing experience for everyone.
お部屋での学びに加えて、今週は庄内公園を2回訪れることができ、とても嬉しそうでした。ジムレッスンがなかったため、この機会に新鮮な空気や自然、そして気持ちの良いお天気を思いきり楽しみました。広々とした場所で凧揚げをするのが大好きで、たくさん走り回ったり、遊具で遊んだりして過ごしました。みんなにとって、とても楽しく、心も体もリフレッシュできる時間となりました。
Looking ahead, next week we have two important events: the Swimming Open Day and the Birthday Party on Monday. We hope you won’t miss them! Overall, it was a joyful and enriching week for everyone. The Shooting Star students showed great enthusiasm, curiosity, and kindness as they learned about celebrations in Japan and around the world, spent time with friends from other classes, and enjoyed outdoor play in nature.
