Nagano Milky Way: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work (April 30th- May 2nd)

We have teamwork in everything that we do with our friends and even family members. This week, we learned that we have roles and responsibilities in our team– leader, helper, listener, and reporter. One of the teams decided that everyone can be everything, so every day, they have different roles in their team.

友達や家族と何をする時も、チームワークが大切です。今週は、チームの中での役割と責任を学びました。リーダー、ヘルパー、聞き手、報告者などです。あるチームは、誰もが何にでもなれると決め、毎日チーム内で異なる役割を担っています。

To apply what we’ve learned, we were challenged to build the tallest and strongest tower in the class with limited materials such as 1 milk carton, 1 tissue paper roll core, and a magazine for only 15 minutes. The first team taped the core of the tissue paper on top of the milk carton, then rolled the pages of the magazine and taped them on top of the other until the time was over. The other team cut the tissue paper roll core in half and taped it on each side of the milk carton to prevent it from falling over. Then they found some cute pictures of toys in the magazine, cut them, and then taped them on the milk carton. The third team crumpled one page of the magazine and tried to insert it inside the milk carton. The leader was mostly doing it at first until some members helped. When the time was up, we placed all the towers on one table, decided which one was the tallest, and then did the durability test, such as wind and earthquake tests. In the end, the Goggles team won with 20 points, followed by the SkiBas team with 15 points, and the Dive team with 10 points. We reflected that we have to keep our eyes on the goal and not be distracted. We have to help each other and think very carefully.

学んだことを応用し、牛乳パック1個、ティッシュペーパーの芯1個、雑誌1冊という限られた材料を使って、クラスで一番高くて強いタワーを15分で作るというチャレンジに挑みました。最初のチームはティッシュペーパーの芯を牛乳パックの上にテープで貼り、雑誌のページを丸めて、時間制限まで重ねてテープで貼りました。もう1つのチームはティッシュペーパーの芯を半分に切り、牛乳パックが倒れないように両側にテープで貼りました。次に、雑誌からかわいいおもちゃの絵を見つけて切り取り、牛乳パックにテープで貼りました。3つ目のチームは、雑誌のページを1ページくしゃくしゃにして、牛乳パックの中に入れようとしました。最初はリーダーがほとんどやっていましたが、メンバーが手伝ってくれました。時間制限が終わると、すべてのタワーを1つのテーブルに並べて、どのタワーが一番高いかを決め、風や地震のテストなどの耐久性テストを行いました。最終的に、ゴーグルチームが20ポイントで優勝し、スキーバスチームが15ポイント、ダイブチームが10ポイントで続きました。私たちは、目標を見据え、その目標から外れないようにすること、そして互いに助け合い、慎重に考えることの重要性を改めて認識しました。

The next day, we had another challenge, which was making the longest paper chain with only one construction paper. We were given 20 minutes to complete the task. The Goggles team cut the paper right away, then glued the strips of paper until they finished at the 8th minute of the timer. The Dive team was not working together at first, leaving two members to do everything. Until they realized that they had to work together. They cut the paper into thin strips and then glued them together. The SkiBas team, on the other hand, cut short strips of paper and then glued them together. Some strips of paper were crumpled because they thought they had cut them wrong. With a limited time, they were not able to finish the task on time and left some more paper uncut. In the end, we lined up the paper chains on the floor and measured which one was the longest. We used our feet to measure each chain. Dive team won with 20 points, Goggles Team with 15 points, and SkiBas with 10 points.

翌日、私たちはまた別の課題に取り組みました。それは、画用紙 1 枚だけで最も長い紙の鎖を作るというものでした。課題を完了するために与えられた時間は 20 分でした。ゴーグルチームはすぐに紙を切り、タイマーの 8 分経過するまで紙の細片をのりで貼り合わせました。ダイブチームは最初は協力せず、2 人ですべての作業を行いました。しかし、協力しなければならないことに気付くと、彼らは紙を細長く切り、それをのりで貼り合わせました。一方、スキーバスチームは紙を短く切り、それをのりで貼り合わせました。切り間違えたと思ったせいで、紙の細片がくしゃくしゃになってしまったりもしました。限られた時間の中で、彼らは課題を時間内に終わらせることができず、切り残した紙がいくつか残ってしまいました。最後に、床に紙の鎖を並べて、どれが一番長いかを測りました。それぞれの鎖の長さを測るために、私たちは足を使いました。ダイブチームが 20 ポイント、ゴーグルチームが 15 ポイント、スキーバスチームが 10 ポイントでダイブチームが優勝しました。
