Inquiry (Energy Sources and Transformation)

A Special Visit from a Community Energy Expert

This week had a very exciting event—a visit from a kind community helper who is an expert in clean and renewable energy! He came to our school to teach us more about solar and wind power and how these sources are helping create a cleaner, healthier planet.

We were amazed to see real solar panels in action and learned how they turn sunlight into electricity. The highlight of the visit was making our own aluminum can windmills! Students carefully cut, shaped, and assembled the windmills, then tested how they moved in the wind.

Our guest also showed us different types of wind turbines. It was a hands-on, inspiring experience that helped students understand the power and creativity of renewable energy.

Presenting Our City Solutions and Reflecting on Our Learning

Later in the week, we wrapped up our “Energy Sources and Transformation” unit with final presentations. Each group designed a fictional town—Smoketown, Rainyville, or Sun Valley—with its own energy problems. The students worked together to research, design, and present creative solutions using dioramas, showing how their town could use cleaner, more efficient energy.

To celebrate their hard work, the Grade 1 students came to watch the presentations! Our students explained their ideas clearly and with pride, answering questions and showing off their detailed dioramas.

Finally, students completed self-assessment reflections. These reflections help students understand what they’ve learned, how they contributed to group work, and how they’ve grown during the unit. Self-assessment encourages responsibility and helps each learner recognize both their strengths and areas for improvement.

This was a week full of inspiration, creativity, and teamwork—a wonderful way to finish this meaningful unit!
