We are delighted to begin our new Unit of Inquiry in Savanna. From the very first week back after the winter break, the excitement was already in the air. The children couldn’t wait and were overheard whispering to one another, “What will our next unit be?” “Will it be about trains?” “Will it be about mochi?” and many other adorable guesses. These moments show that our Savanna learners are active participants in their learning and already understand that inquiry is a natural and meaningful part of school life. They are curious, knowledgeable, and genuinely love being inquirers.
Savannaクラスでは、冬休み明けと同時に新しいユニットがスタートしました。子どもたちは次のユニットが何になるのか待ちきれない様子で、
「次は何のユニットかな？」
「電車についてかな？」
「おもちじゃない？」
などと、かわいらしい予想をささやき合う姿も見られました。
こうしたやりとりから、Savannaの子どもたちが自分たちの学びに主体的に関わり、探究は園生活の中で自然で意味のあるものだ、とすでに理解していることが伝わってきます。
This week, we officially introduced the unit under the transdisciplinary theme How We Organize Ourselves. In this unit, we will be inquiring into special moments in people’s lives. Our central idea is:
People around the world celebrate special days.
Our Lines of Inquiry are:
- Different celebrations in Japan, with a focus on traditional and cultural events
- How people celebrate special moments in different ways around the world
概要にもあります通り本ユニットでは、教科の枠を越えるテーマ 「How We Organize Ourselves（私達はどのように自分を表現するか）」 のもと、人々の人生における特別な瞬間について探究していきます。
今回のユニットのセントラルアイディアは、「人々は世界中で、大切な節目を様々な方法でお祝いする」です。
子どもたちは、さまざまな文化や国に目を向けながら、LOI1「日本におけるさまざまなお祝い」、LOI2「世界の人々は、それぞれの国や文化の中で特別な日をお祝いする」をもとに、「なぜ人は特別な日を祝うのか」「どのようにお祝いしているのか」などを考え探究を深めていきます。これからの学びの広がりを、ぜひ楽しみにしていてください。
During our prior knowledge assessment, the children already demonstrated an understanding of several celebrations in Japan. As expected, there were also moments of uncertainty and comments such as “I don’t know…”—and this curiosity is exactly what we hope to address throughout the unit. By the end of the inquiry, our goal is for learners to feel more informed, confident, and connected to the meaning behind each celebration.
ユニットに入る前に、子どもたちの事前知識を知るため、「セレブレーションってなに？」と問いかけてみました。すでに日本のいくつかのお祝い行事について理解している子もいれば、「わからない…」という声も。その“わからない”という気持ちこそが、このユニットで大切にしていきたい探究の出発点です。
探究を通して、子どもたちがそれぞれのお祝いの意味や背景をより深く知り、学び終える頃には、知識が増え、自信を持ち、そして行事とのつながりを感じられるようになることを目標としています。
