OUR TRIP TO THE CLEAN CENTER- Rainforest May 7th-16th

Hi everyone!

Our class had a special field trip to the clean center with the Milky Way class from Minami campus. This collaboration between both campuses is to deepen the students’ knowledge about our current unit of inquiry, where we are discussing “recycling.” During this trip, our youngsters learned how the trash picked up by the garbage trucks can be recycled. They saw how to manage and segregate the waste at the center. There were two big cranes picking up the trash from the ground and putting it in the recycling area where it is burned. We were also told that the energy generated from the trash helps the pool near the center to get hot water. Aside from segregation, we also watched how the machine recycles used paper into new colored paper in just 5 seconds. It was a great trip, indeed, to witness how recycling works.

先週金曜日、南松本キャンパスのMilkyWayクラスのお友達と一緒に、松本クリーンセンターに行ってきました。今回のコラボレーションは、両クラスで話し合っている「リサイクル」について、子ども達の知識を深めるためのものです。見学では、色々な地域から集められたゴミが回収される様子や、回収されたゴミがどのように管理し分別するのかを見ることが出来ました。回収されたゴミが集められた場所では、大きなクレーンが１台、地面からゴミを拾い上げ、ごみを砕き、焼却炉に運んでいました。ゴミから発生するエネルギーは、センターの近くにあるプールのお湯を作ることにも役立っていることも教えてもらって、子ども達はびっくりしていました。分別だけでなく、使用済みの紙をわずか5秒で新しい色紙にリサイクルする機械も見せてもらいました。Rainforestさん達は、「どうしてリサイクルするの？」、「どうしてここにクリーンセンターがあるの？」など、たくさんの質問をして、疑問を解決してきました。リサイクルの仕組みを目の当たりにした、素晴らしい見学になりました。

Safety first!

As part of the school’s preparation for natural disasters like earthquakes, we conducted a drill with the parents. First, we talked about what an earthquake is and the rules to follow when it happens. Next, we practiced the safety precautions such as drop, cover, and hold. It was great to see how knowledgeable our little ones are when it comes to doing the drill. When they heard the bell ring, everybody covered their heads and hid under the table. When the earthquake stopped, we gathered all our belongings and evacuated. The parents picked them up early as part of the drill.

地震などの自然災害に対するスクールの備えの一環として、保護者の皆さんと一緒に緊急引き渡し訓練を行いました。まず、地震とは何か、地震が起きたときに守るべきルールについてクラスで話しました。次に、サイレンの音を鳴らし、実際に地震が起きたことを想定した訓練をしました。みんな、頭を守り素早く机の下に隠れる事が出来ました。地震が止んだ事を伝えると、すぐにヘルメット代わりのスクール帽をかぶり、避難をする準備をしました。保護者の皆さんのご協力のもと、安全に子ども達を引き渡すことが出来ました。

Aside from doing the earthquake drill at school, we also conducted it at the park with the Savanna class. This kind of training helps the children become aware that an earthquake or any other dangerous event can happen anytime and anywhere. It is important to enlighten them about what the scenario would be if an earthquake occurs while we are at the park and what we need to do. It is also a vital preparation for the teachers. The drill went well, and everybody could follow the instructions. Well done!

スクールでの地震訓練のほかに、サバンナクラスと一緒に公園でも訓練をしました。地震やその他の危険な出来事はいつでもどこでも起こりうるので、公園にいるときに地震が起きたらどうなるのか、私たちは何をすべきなのかを子どもたちに教えることが大切です。また、私たちスタッフにとっても、緊急時に何をすべきか、どこに避難するべきかを準備することが出来ました。みんなよく話を聞いて、すばやく非難することが出来ました！

In our phonics lesson, we started learning about “short and long vowels.” First, we learned the vowels: a, e, i, o, u, and their long and short sounds. Then, for our activity, the students chose a word, read it in front of the class, and categorized it. Here’s a glimpse of our activity.

フォニックスのレッスンでは、「短母音と長母音」について学び始めました。まず、母音：a、e、i、o、uと、その長音と短音を学びました。その後、子ども達一人ずつ単語を選び、クラスの前で読み、長音か短音かを分類しました。レッスンの様子です。

今週は、枝豆の種も蒔きました。まずは種を袋から取り出し、匂いをくんくん。「白い匂いがするよ。」など、豆のような匂いがすることが分かりました。種を植えるステップ、①土を混ぜる③水を入れる③種を入れる穴をあける④種を入れる⑤土をかぶせる、という５つの工程を説明し、グループの中で話し合い分担して作業をしました。順番を守りながら、とても上手に種まきが出来ました。毎日、小さなハルパーさんが枝豆のチェック、水やりをしてくれています。芽が出てくるのが楽しみですね。そしてなんと！以前公園で拾った種を植えていた鉢から、芽が出てきました！なんとも可愛らしい芽で、みんなうれしくなりました！
