While exploring our book about celebrations around the world, something unexpected — and wonderful — happened.
As we turned the pages, the children’s attention was caught by something colorful and cute: an Easter event. Bright eggs, decorations, smiling families. It was not part of our lesson plan for the day, but their curiosity was immediate and genuine. They wanted to know more — so we followed their lead.
世界のお祝いについての絵本の中で子どもたちの目をひいたのは、イースターのイベント！色とりどりの卵、飾りつけ、そして笑顔の家族たち。その日はレッスンプランには入っていませんでしたが、子どもたちの興味に寄り添い、イースターについて探究を進めることにしました。
We learned that Easter is celebrated in many parts of the world, especially in Christian countries. However, before it became widely known as a Christian celebration, it was originally connected to the arrival of spring — a season symbolizing new life, growth, and fresh beginnings. We talked about how many cultures celebrate the end of winter and the coming of warmer days, often using symbols like eggs and flowers to represent new life.
私たちは、イースターは特にキリスト教国で祝われていること、もともとは春の訪れのお祝いと結びついていたことも知りました。新しい命や成長、そして新たな始まりを告げる季節に、卵や花がシンボルとして使われることも話し合いました。
As we discussed the meaning of resurrection, we made sure to guide the conversation thoughtfully. We asked the students questions such as:
“If there is resurrection, does that mean it’s okay to jump out of a window?”
“Does it mean we can stop taking care of ourselves or others?”
「復活」の意味について話し合う中で、子どもたちにはこんな問いかけをしてみました。
「もし“復活”があるなら、窓から飛び降りても大丈夫ということ？」
「自分や他の人を大切にしなくてもいいと言う事なのかな？」
These questions helped the children think critically and understand that resurrection is a symbolic and spiritual concept. We emphasized that Easter is a celebration with important meaning, but it does not mean we can act carelessly. Celebrations remind us of values — they do not replace responsibility.
子どもたちが「復活」についてそれぞれに考えを深める中で、復活は目に見える出来事というよりも、希望や大切な思いを表す意味があることを一緒に学びました。イースターは大切な意味をもつお祝いですが、「お祝いだから何をしてもいい」ということではありません。
お祝いは、私たちが大切にしたい気持ちや価値を思い出す機会です。楽しみながらも、思いやりや責任を大切にしていきたいと考えています。
In addition to our discussions, we were fortunate to be visited by two of our American teachers from ISN: Mr. Josh of Gojo and Ms. Alex of Waterfall. They shared with us some of the most popular celebrations in the United States, including the State Fair and Thanksgiving.
さらに今週は、ISNのアメリカ人教師である五常キャンパスのMr.Joshと、WaterfallのMs.Alexがゲストスピーカーとして来て、ステートフェア（州のお祭り）やサンクスギビング（感謝祭）についてお話してくれました！
After comparing festivals in Japan with American state fairs, the students had the opportunity to experience a mini “fair” in our own classroom. They played games and imagined what it would be like to attend one. It was exciting to see their engagement and laughter as they made connections across cultures.
日本のお祭りとアメリカのステートフェアを比べたあと、子どもたちはミニ「フェア」を体験！ゲームを楽しみながら、「実際に行ったらどんな感じかな？」と想像をふくらませました。
文化を越えてつながりを見つけながら、いきいきと参加し、笑い声を響かせる子どもたちの姿はとても印象的でした。
They also learned about Thanksgiving — a celebration that many Americans consider as important as Christmas. It is a time for families and friends to gather, share food, express gratitude, and spend meaningful time together.
また、サンクスギビング（感謝祭）についても学びました。これは多くのアメリカ人にとって、クリスマスと同じくらい大切にされているお祝いです。
家族や友人が集まり、食事を分かち合い、感謝の気持ちを伝え合いながら、心のこもった時間を一緒に過ごす特別なひとときであることを知りました。
As we prepare to wrap up this unit on celebrations, we are proud of how much we have learned — not only about festivals around the world, but also about respect, culture, symbolism, and shared human experiences.
また水曜日には、生徒のお父さんである Mr. Cosmosをお招きし、マレーシアの「ハリラヤ」について教えていただきました。
ハリラヤとは、イスラム教の断食月（ラマダン）明けを祝う大切な祝日で、家族や親戚が集まり、感謝の気持ちを分かち合う日です。新しい服を着たり、ごちそうを囲んだり、子どもたちは「デュイット・ラヤ」と呼ばれるお祝いのお金を受け取ることもあるそうです。
子どもたちは、ハリラヤでプレゼントやお祝いのお金を入れる袋「グリーンパケット」をクラフトで作りました。模様や色使いを工夫しながら、一つひとつとても丁寧に色を塗り、最後まで集中して仕上げる姿が印象的でした。
異文化に触れながら、楽しみつつ理解を深める、貴重な学びの時間。今回のユニットでは、世界のお祭りについてだけでなく、尊重すること、文化、象徴の意味、そして人々に共通する体験についても、たくさんの学びがありました。
