UNDERSTANDING GROWTH- Rainforest Feb. 2nd-6th – International School of Nagano

Greetings, everyone! Here’s a glimpse into our recent Unit of Inquiry learning and the meaningful conversations we shared together.

During our Unit of Inquiry lesson on growth, we talked about what growth means and who helps us grow. The children shared thoughtful answers, mentioning their parents, grandparents, cousins, brothers and sisters, farmers, and even themselves. It was truly amazing to hear their ideas and how aware they are of the people around them. They also reflected on the things they couldn’t do before but can do now. We were pleasantly surprised when some students shared that they once couldn’t speak English, read books, write, or understand certain things—but now they can. Their reflections went far beyond what we, as teachers, expected to hear. Thank you for sharing your growth, Rainforest!

こんにちは、皆さん！
今回は、最近の UOI（探究の単元） の学びと、子どもたちと一緒に行った心に残る話し合いの様子をお伝えします。

「成長」をテーマにしたレッスンでは、成長とは何か、そして誰が自分たちの成長を支えてくれているのかについて話し合いました。子どもたちは、保護者の方やおじいちゃん、おばあちゃん、いとこ、きょうだい、農家の人、そして「自分自身」など、たくさんの思いやりのある意見を出してくれました。周りの人たちの存在にしっかり気づいている様子が伝わり、とても素敵でした。

また、以前はできなかったけれど、今はできるようになったことについても振り返りました。中には、「前は英語が話せなかった」「本が読めなかった」「文字が書けなかった」「よく分からなかったことがあったけれど、今は分かるようになった」と話してくれる子もいて、私たちの想像を超える深い気づきに、嬉しい驚きがありました。

成長の姿をたくさん共有してくれてありがとう、Rainforestのみんな！🌱

We decided to prepare a small gift to express our gratitude to the people who will be taking care of us at the places we will be visiting. The children had many ideas for gifts they would like to give, such as flowers, hearts, and medals! As a first step, we all worked together to make three-dimensional tulips.

The children have become very good at matching the corners and making clear fold lines when folding. Everyone was able to create a beautiful flower and felt very proud and satisfied with their work. 🌷This hands-on experience helped develop their fine motor skills, focus, and creativity while giving them a sense of pride in their finished work.

これから訪問する場所でお世話になる方たちの為に、感謝の気持ちを伝えるため何かプレゼントをしよういう事になりました。お花、ハート、メダルなどプレゼントしたい物はたくさん！まずはみんなで立体のチューリップを作りました。角を合わせておったり、折筋をしっかりとつけたりする事もとても上手になりました！みんなきれいなお花が折れて、とても満足していました。

このような手を使った体験を通して、指先の巧緻性や集中力、創造力が育まれ、完成した作品に対する達成感や誇らしい気持ちも感じることができました。

In class, we celebrated Setsubun, a traditional event that marks the arrival of spring and teaches us about inviting good fortune and driving away bad spirits. The children made their own “beans” by rolling up newspaper and energetically threw them at the oni who came to visit our classroom.

Although the Rainforest children bravely faced the oni, after it left, they carefully locked the classroom door to make sure it wouldn’t come back. They proudly shared that they had the courage to fight and chase away the “crybaby oni” and the “angry oni” inside themselves, looking very happy and accomplished.

クラスでは春の訪れをつげる節分のお祝いを行い、福を呼び込み、悪いものを追い払うという節分について学びました。子どもたちは新聞紙を丸めて自分たちで「豆」を作り、教室にやって来た鬼に向かって、元気いっぱいに豆まきをしました。
勇敢に鬼に立ち向かったRainforestさん達でしたが、鬼が帰った後はしっかりと教室の鍵をかけて、鬼が戻ってこないよう警戒していました。勇気を出して戦い、自分の中の「泣き虫鬼」や「怒りん坊鬼」も退治したと、とてもうれしそうでした。
