This week in English, we have been developing our persuasive writing skills. The students learned how writers use rhetorical questions to encourage readers to think about an issue. We also practised using strong and emotive adjectives, adverbs, and verbs to make our writing more powerful and convincing. Thinking carefully about the words we choose is an important skill that will also help us when writing stories and other creative pieces in the future.

We have also begun exploring counterarguments and solutions. This involves considering different perspectives and thinking critically about an issue. Students learned that strong persuasive writing does not simply present one side of an argument—it also considers possible problems, concerns, or opposing viewpoints. We then work to find solutions, compromises, or ways to address those concerns.

These critical thinking skills are valuable far beyond persuasive writing. Being able to step back and consider what someone with a different opinion might think can help us in our friendships, when working in teams, and when making decisions. Learning to identify potential problems and think of solutions is an important life skill that we will continue to develop throughout the year.

In spelling, we have been practising common silent letter patterns. Understanding these patterns helps students improve both their spelling and reading skills. I will be sending home a list of some of the spelling patterns and words we will be working on this year.

Our Bug Hotel project continues to grow! The students have been working hard to build, improve, and maintain the hotel, and we are excited to report that it is already beginning to attract visitors. From next week, we will start observing the Bug Hotel more closely and recording data about which creatures are checking in. This will provide an excellent opportunity to explore scientific enquiry and the scientific method in a real-world context. Students will learn how scientists make observations, collect evidence, identify patterns, and use data to answer questions about the natural world.

We are looking forward to seeing who our first regular Bug Hotel guests will be!

今週の英語では、説得文（Persuasive Writing）の書き方について学習しました。子どもたちは、読み手に考えさせるために使われる「修辞疑問文（Rhetorical Questions）」について学び、また、より説得力のある文章を書くために、強い印象を与える形容詞・副詞・動詞を使う練習をしました。言葉の選び方を意識することは、今後の物語づくりや創作活動にも役立つ大切なスキルです。 また、『反対意見（Counterargument）』と『解決策（Solution）』についても学び始めました。これは、物事をさまざまな視点から考え、批判的思考力を育てる活動です。説得力のある文章は、自分の意見だけを主張するのではなく、反対する人がどのような考えを持つかを想像し、その懸念や問題点に対する解決策や妥協案を考えることが大切です。 このような考える力は、作文だけでなく日常生活でも役立ちます。友達との関わりやグループ活動、計画を立てる場面などで、異なる意見を持つ人の立場を考えることができるようになります。問題を予測し、解決策を見つける力は、これからも伸ばしていきたい大切なスキルです。 スペリングでは、サイレントレター（発音しない文字）のパターンを練習しました。これらのパターンを理解することで、スペリングだけでなく読解力の向上にもつながります。今年学習するスペリングパターンや単語のリストも後日お配りする予定です。 バグホテルプロジェクトも順調に進んでいます。子どもたちは協力しながらバグホテルの整備や改良を続けており、少しずつ昆虫たちの訪問も見られるようになってきました。来週からは、どの生き物が『チェックイン』しているのかを観察し、記録やデータ収集を始めます。 また、バグホテルを題材にしながら、科学的探究（Scientific Enquiry）や科学的方法（Scientific Method）についても学んでいきます。観察を行い、証拠を集め、パターンを見つけ、データをもとに考察することで、科学者がどのように自然界について理解を深めているのかを体験的に学ぶ予定です。 これからどんな生き物たちがバグホテルの常連さんになってくれるのか、みんなで楽しみにしています。
