This Week in Grade 4

We have had a fun and creative week in Grade 4!

The students were keen to do some more art, so we spent some time learning about the famous artist Vincent van Gogh through a PowerPoint presentation and a reading comprehension activity. We explored some of his life, his artistic style, and some of his most famous paintings.

After that, we put our own artistic skills into action. Using the flower-drawing techniques we practised a few weeks ago, the students created their own still-life sunflower paintings in a vase. The results were fantastic! Every artwork had its own unique twist, and the creativity on display was impressive. It has been wonderful to see how confident the students are becoming with their drawing skills. Many students have even chosen to continue drawing during break and lunch times.

Van Gogh painted many sunflower paintings throughout his life, and we discovered they are just as fun to draw today! Perhaps our next art project will be a landscape inspired by The Starry Night. With the beautiful views from our school, we have plenty of inspiration right outside our windows. As long as nobody gets into an argument and decides to cut off their own ear, we’ll leave that particular artistic habit to old Vincent!

In English, we have continued practising spelling patterns, focusing on ie, cei, and eigh words. We have also completed more reading comprehension activities and have been looking closely at the different types of questions that can appear in texts. Understanding these question types helps students choose the best reading strategies when answering.

We have also continued developing our persuasive writing skills by practising opinions, counterarguments, and solutions. The students have been using their critical thinking skills to consider different viewpoints and support their ideas with reasons.

There are some spelling words for homework this week. These are words that we will continue learning over the coming months, so there is no need to feel pressure to master them all this weekend. Instead, think of them as a useful collection of Grade 4 spelling words that we will revisit regularly. I have prepared a Kahoot! using these words, and we’ll see if we can beat our own scores each time we play. I’ll also be giving out a word search for a bit of extra fun.

The students have a three-day weekend ahead, so I hope everyone has a chance to relax, recharge, and enjoy some family time.

今週のGrade 4

今週もGrade 4では、楽しく充実した一週間を過ごしました！

子どもたちから「もっとアートをやりたい！」という声があったので、今週は有名な画家フィンセント・ファン・ゴッホについて、パワーポイントや読解活動を通して学びました。ゴッホの人生や作風、そして代表的な作品について知ることができました。

その後、数週間前に練習した花の描き方を活かして、ひまわりの静物画に挑戦しました。花瓶に生けられたひまわりを描き、それぞれが自分らしいアレンジを加えた素晴らしい作品を完成させました。どの作品もとても芸術的で個性にあふれており、子どもたちの創造力には本当に感心しました。

また、多くの子どもたちが休み時間や昼休みにも自主的に絵を描くようになり、アートへの興味がさらに広がっている様子が見られます。

ゴッホ自身もたくさんのひまわりの絵を描いていましたが、実際に描いてみると、なぜ彼がひまわりを何度も題材にしたのか少し分かる気がします。とても楽しい題材でした！

次は『星月夜』のような風景画にも挑戦してみたいと思っています。学校から見える素晴らしい景色を活かせそうですね。ただし、誰かが口論の末に自分の耳を切り落とすようなことだけは避けたいと思います。その少し変わった行動は、昔のゴッホさんにお任せしておきましょう！

英語では、ie・cei・eigh のスペリングパターンを練習しました。また、読解問題にも引き続き取り組み、どのような種類の問題が出題されるのかを詳しく学んでいます。問題のタイプを理解することで、より適切な読解ストラテジーを選びながら答えられるようになります。

さらに、意見文（Persuasive Writing）の学習も進めています。自分の意見だけでなく、反対意見（Counter Argument）や解決策（Solution）についても考え、クリティカルシンキング（批判的思考力）を使いながら説得力のある文章を書く練習をしています。

今週はスペリングの宿題もあります。これらの単語は今後数か月にわたって継続して学習していくものですので、この週末だけで全て覚えなければならないというわけではありません。Grade 4でよく使われる重要な単語のセットとして、少しずつ慣れていってもらえればと思います。

また、これらの単語を使ったKahoot!も用意しました。みんなで何度も挑戦しながら、自分たちの最高得点を更新していけたらと思います。さらに、楽しみながら学べるようにワードサーチ（単語探し）も配布する予定です！

今週末は3連休です。
