We made fantastic progress on our Design Your Own School projects this week, using our maths, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills.
On Monday, we began by creating a school budget. We learned key vocabulary related to budgeting and discussed the difference between wants and needs. The children used their maths skills to decide how to spend their money wisely while also thinking carefully about what was most important for their school.
On Tuesday, the children presented their budgets to their classmates and explained the priorities they had chosen. It was interesting to see that, because every child had designed a different type of school, everyone’s priorities were different. The class asked thoughtful questions and shared their ideas with confidence.
On Wednesday, we designed a weekly timetable for our schools. The children considered how to create a schedule that was both healthy and enjoyable while also allowing students to learn as much as possible. We discussed questions such as:
- What lessons are best in the morning when everyone is fresh?
- What activities should happen just before lunch when everyone is getting hungry?
- What is most suitable for the end of the day when students are feeling tired?
Some students even chose to schedule field trips on Fridays as a special way to end the week!
On Thursday, we explored the IB Learner Profile. Working in small groups, the children discussed the different learner profile attributes before choosing the five values they believed were most important for their own schools. They explained their choices and thought carefully about the type of learning community they wanted to create.
On Friday, we discussed school rules, thinking about both the benefits of each rule and any challenges it might create. The children then enjoyed getting creative by designing school uniforms for their schools.
Throughout the week, the students also continued building their impressive school models, which are really beginning to take shape.
To finish the week with a little fun, we also enjoyed watching classic spooky TV episodes. We met the mischievous ventriloquist dummy Slappy in an episode of Goosebumps, and watched an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? featuring a mysterious monster in the school swimming pool. To make the experience even more exciting, the children hid behind cardboard “shields” with small viewing windows cut out, peeking through during the scary parts! There were plenty of laughs, screams, and smiles!
We are looking forward to another exciting week as we continue developing our schools and bringing our ideas to life.
今週は、「自分だけの学校をデザインしよう」プロジェクトで素晴らしい進歩が見られました！
子どもたちは算数、クリティカルシンキング（批判的思考）、創造力、そして協働する力を活かして活動に取り組みました。
月曜日は、学校の予算作りからスタートしました。予算に関する新しい英単語を学び、「欲しいもの（Wants）」と「必要なもの（Needs）」の違いについて考えました。子どもたちは算数の力を使って予算を計算しながら、自分たちの学校にとって本当に大切なものは何かを話し合い、計画を立てました。
火曜日は、それぞれが作成した予算をクラスで発表しました。自分たちが何を優先したのかを説明し、友達からの質問にも自信を持って答えることができました。一人ひとり違う学校を考えていたため、優先するものもさまざまで、とても興味深い発表になりました。
水曜日は、自分たちの学校の時間割をデザインしました。子どもたちは、「たくさん学べること」と「楽しく健康的に過ごせること」の両方を考えながら時間割を作成しました。
例えば、
- 朝の元気な時間にはどんな授業が向いているかな？
- お腹が空いてくる昼食前にはどんな活動がよいかな？
- 一日の終わりには何をすると楽しく過ごせるかな？
といったことについて話し合いました。中には、金曜日を校外学習の日にして、一週間の締めくくりを特別なものにしたグループもありました。
木曜日は、IBの「学習者像（Learner Profile）」について学びました。グループでそれぞれの資質について話し合い、自分たちの学校で特に大切にしたい5つの資質を選びました。どのような学校にしたいかを考えながら、それぞれ理由もしっかり説明することができました。
金曜日は、学校のルールについて考えました。それぞれのルールの良い点だけでなく、課題になりそうなことも話し合い、その後は学校の制服デザインに挑戦しました。子どもたちは想像力を発揮しながら、個性あふれる制服を考えていました。
また、一週間を通して学校模型づくりも続けました。少しずつ形になってきており、完成がとても楽しみです。
最後は少し楽しい時間として、クラシックなホラー番組も鑑賞しました。『グースバンプス』では、いたずら好きの腹話術人形「スラッピー」が登場するお話を、『Are You Afraid of the Dark?』では学校のプールに現れる不思議なモンスターのお話を楽しみました。さらに、子どもたちは小さな覗き穴を開けた段ボールの「シールド」を使い、怖い場面では隠れながら少しずつ覗くという遊びも楽しみました。教室には笑い声や悲鳴、そしてたくさんの笑顔があふれていました！
来週も、子どもたちがそれぞれの学校づくりをさらに発展させ、アイデアを形にしていく様子を楽しみにしています。
