Another fantastic week in Waterfall class!　　

We have been continuing to dive deeper into our unit of inquiry topic of “animals”. We played a game where students looked at close-up pictures of the skin of animals. They had to then pick which photo of an animal matched the skin. Once we got used to the rules, it was a really enjoyable game. We also talked about the difference between “skin”, “fur”, “feathers”, “scales”, etc. 

Unit of Inquiry（探究学習）では、「動物」をテーマにした探究をさらに深めています。今週は、動物の体の一部を拡大した写真を見て、「これはどの動物かな？」と当てるゲームを楽しみました。最初はルールを理解するまで少し難しそうな様子もありましたが、慣れてくると子どもたちは大盛り上がり！夢中になって考えながら参加していました。また、「skin（皮膚）」「fur（毛）」「feathers（羽）」「scales（うろこ）」など、それぞれの動物の体の特徴についても話し合いました。遊びを通して動物への興味や知識を広げながら、子どもたちは楽しんで探究を進めています。

Pool play has been continuing, and to match with our animal theme, we spent the first 5-10 minutes of pool time pretending to be animals! We saw some ferocious crocodiles, hungry sharks, beautiful flamingos, and even some cute penguins! Not only does this enable us to naturally practice and learn new vocabulary, but it helps us think and experience more deeply what these animals are like, and stimulate interest in students.

「動物」がテーマの探究に合わせて、プール遊びの最初の5～10分間は、動物になりきって遊びました。迫力満点のワニや、お腹をすかせたサメ、優雅なフラミンゴ、そしてかわいらしいペンギンなど、子どもたちは思い思いの動物になりきりながら、水の中で元気いっぱい体を動かしていました。このような遊びを通して、動物の名前や特徴に関する新しい英語の語彙を自然に身に付けるだけでなく、「その動物はどんな動きをするのかな？」「どんな特徴があるのかな？」と想像しながら表現することで、動物への理解をより深め、子どもたちの興味や探究心を育んでいます。

This week we also started studying the alphabet. We made a classroom display with the letters that spell “Animals”. I was happily surprised to see that students were already familiar with the shapes of letters, and were keen to match them to the alphabet wall! Following on from this, and at their own request, some students even began tracing their names using pencils! Even at such a young age, the curiosity and enthusiasm for new skills naturally arises! We will definitely build on this during August.

子ども達に「Animals」の文字をカラフルに塗ってもらい、クラスをデコレーションすると、アルファベット表を見ながら文字を探して楽しそうに並べる姿が見られました。さらに、その活動をきっかけに、「自分の名前も書いてみたい！」という声が子どもたちから自然にあがり、自分の名前を鉛筆でなぞることにも挑戦する姿が見られました。このように、新しいことへの好奇心や「やってみたい！」という意欲は自然と育まれていきます。子どもたちの興味や主体性を大切にしながら、8月も一人ひとりの「学びたい」という気持ちをさらに広げていきたいと思います。

Our spotlighted learner profile attribute in Shimauchi right now is being “balanced”. Helping students reflect on this, we have been highlighting how important it is to try new food that we normally don’t like, and to try to finish all of our lunch. Everyone has been trying really hard, and been so proud to show their empty plates! Let’s keep it up!

今月、島内キャンパスで重点的に取り組んでいるLearner Profile（学習者像）は「Balanced（バランスのとれた人）」です。子どもたちが「Balanced」とはどのようなことかを考えられるよう、給食の時間には、「苦手な食べ物にも挑戦してみよう」「最後まで食べ切ることを頑張ってみよう」と声を掛けながら取り組んでいます。子どもたちは一人ひとりがとてもよく頑張っており、食べ終えた後には、空になったお皿を誇らしそうに見せてくれる姿がたくさん見られました。これからも、さまざまなことに挑戦する気持ちを大切にしながら、「Balanced」の姿を少しずつ育んでいきたいと思います。

Next week we have our field trip to the Shiga fossil museum to look forward to! We hope it continues to fuel the students’ curiosity about the natural world.

来週は、志賀化石館への園外保育（フィールドトリップ）を予定しています。実際に化石を見たり、自然の歴史に触れたりすることで、子どもたちが身の回りの自然や生き物への興味・関心をさらに深めてくれることを楽しみにしています。今回の園外保育が、現在取り組んでいる「動物」の探究（Unit of Inquiry）につながり、子どもたちの「もっと知りたい！」「どうしてだろう？」という探究心をさらに育む機会になることを願っています。
