It’s now the week before Obon holiday, and we’ve been super busy!
We have continued our unit of inquiry studies on animals, and we’ve been going deeper and deeper! This time we have been focussing on what the “needs” of animals are, specifically where different animals live – also known as habitats!
We were looking at three habitats in particular: forests, farms, and water. Students were able to do their own inquiry into what these habitats might look like by using sensory buckets. A sensory bucket contains items that stimulate a student’s imagination and curiosity. In our buckets we had lots of items from Mr Jimmy’s farm – wheat, beans, straw, rocks, plants, soil, and even some fruits too. We touched, looked, and smelled the different habitats. Students even used magnifying glasses to examine further!
今週も引き続き、動物をテーマにした探究活動（Unit of Inquiry）を進め、さらに学びを深めました。今回は、動物たちが生きていくために必要なもの、「どこに住んでいるのか（生息地・Habitat）」に焦点を当てて探究しました。今回は、森・農場・水辺の3つの生息地について学びました。子どもたちは「センサリーボックス（感覚遊び）」を使って、それぞれの生息地がどのような場所なのかを自分たちで探究しました。センサリーボックスには、子どもたちの想像力や好奇心を刺激するさまざまな素材が入っています。今回は、Jimmy先生の農場から持ってきた小麦、豆、わら、石、植物、土、そして果物など、たくさんの自然物を使い、３つの生息地の特徴が出るようにセットしました。子どもたちは、それぞれの生息地を触ったり、見たり、匂いを嗅いだりしながら五感を使って探究しました。さらに、虫眼鏡を使って細かい部分までじっくり観察し、より深く学ぶことができました。
Later in the week, we used the same buckets, but this time we placed different animal toys in them to allow students to really explore the concept of what a habitat means. It was a great success, and students were really engaged.
We also used our creative and fine motor skills to create art of zebras and giraffes! Students carefully painted lines on the zebras, and finger painted dots on the giraffes. It wasn’t about how “nicely” we could do it, it was about engaging with the idea that animals have different patterns on their bodies, as well as enjoying creating something!
週の後半には、同じセンサリーボックスを使いながら、今度はさまざまな動物のフィギュアを入れて活動を行いました。子どもたちは、動物たちがそれぞれどの生息地に住んでいるのかを考えながら、「生息地（Habitat）」とは何かをより深く探究することができました。この活動は、子どもたちにとってもとても興味深く、集中して意欲的に取り組んでいました。また、創造力や指先の巧緻性を育む活動として、シマウマとキリンのアート制作も行いました！シマウマには筆を使って丁寧にしま模様を描き、キリンには指を使って点々模様をつけました。この活動の目的は、上手に作品を作ることではありません。動物たちがそれぞれ異なる模様を持っていることに気づき、その特徴に触れながら、創作活動そのものを楽しむことを大切にしました。
We went to the park together and did some of our own field work! We explored the different natural materials we could find, as well as used our bodies to become a variety of creatures with animal yoga! We became snakes, crabs, even some gorillas!
みんなで公園へ出かけ、実際にフィールドワークも行いました！公園では、自然の中にあるさまざまな素材を探したり観察したりしながら、自然への興味を深めました。また、自然の中アニマルヨガにも挑戦しました。体を使っていろいろな動物になりきり、ヘビやカニ、さらにはゴリラにも変身！動物の特徴や動きを楽しみながら表現することで、体をたくさん動かし、笑顔あふれる時間となりました。
Students have also been practicing writing letters of the alphabet. Ms Ayako carefully made a whole set of animal alphabet cards, and students could choose whichever animal they were interested in. Some used crayons, some used pencils, and we played with the shapes of letters!
子どもたちはアルファベットを書く練習にも取り組みました。Ayako先生が動物をテーマにしたオリジナルのアルファベットカードを作成し、子どもたちは自分の興味のある動物のカードを自由に選びながら活動しました。クレヨンを使う子もいれば、鉛筆を使う子もいて、それぞれのペースでアルファベットの形をなぞったり書いたりしながら、文字に親しみました。子どもたちは楽しみながら文字の形に触れ、動物への興味とアルファベット学習を結び付けた活動となりました。
Finally, the big highlight of the week was visiting the Shiga Fossil Museum! We went with Canyon class, and had a great time. We saw fossils of whales, as well as smaller creatures. There was also a room full of animals that had been well preserved for display. Including polar bears, lions, and penguins. Students recognised them really well, and it gave them more experience to help them grasp our unit of inquiry more deeply.
そして、今週一番のハイライトは、信州新町化石博物館への園外保育でした！Canyonクラスのお友だちと一緒に出かけ、とても楽しい時間を過ごしました。博物館では、クジラの化石をはじめ、さまざまな小さな生き物の化石を見学しました。また、ホッキョクグマ、ライオン、ペンギンなど、多くの動物のはく製が展示されている部屋もありました。子どもたちは、これまで探究活動の中で学んできた動物をすぐに見つけて名前を言ったり、「見たことある！」「これは○○だ！」と嬉しそうに話したりする姿が見られました。実際の展示物を間近で見ることで、子どもたちは動物への理解や興味をさらに深めることができ、現在取り組んでいるUnit of Inquiryをより豊かに学ぶ貴重な経験となりました。
