English — Describing Places
In English, we have been learning how writers can bring places to life through descriptive language. We explored our five senses, interesting adjectives and powerful verbs, and read four examples of place descriptions from both local and global settings.
We analysed the examples to identify how each writer used sensory details to help the reader imagine the place. Next, we will put these skills into practice by using our own five senses to create descriptive writing about places we know.
Science — Weather and Temperature 🌡️
In Science, we started an investigation into how temperature changes throughout the day and how weather affects temperature.
We have been taking temperature measurements at different times of the day and recording our results so that we can look for patterns. We were particularly lucky to have a day when it rained almost continuously! This gave us a great opportunity to add a rainy day to our investigation and compare it with other weather conditions.
Inquiry & Social Studies — Where We Are in Place and Time 🗾
We have started our new inquiry unit, Where We Are in Place and Time, which connects closely with our MEXT Social Studies learning about our prefecture.
Our Lines of Inquiry will explore:
- The geographical and historical features of Nagano.
- How these features have affected the way people live.
- How communities can preserve and adapt their heritage.
To tune in to the unit, we began by looking at a map of Japan and identifying the prefectures surrounding Nagano. We then discussed how different prefectures are famous for different foods and began thinking about the factors that influence what a region produces and becomes known for.
Students identified factors such as climate, topography, soil and natural resources, water, location, trade and transport, history and culture.
For example, we discovered that Nagasaki is famous for Castella, a sponge cake influenced by Portuguese traders and sailors who arrived through its ports. This helped us see how location, trade and cultural exchange can influence the food and culture of a place.
Next, we will focus on Nagano and investigate what makes our prefecture special. We will explore how its geographical and historical features have influenced the way people live, work and use the land.
Global Connection — Girls Move Mountains ⚽
We also watched the short film Girls Move Mountains as part of the PICTS Sports Cinema Collaboration event. The film follows a group of girls and women taking part in a football tournament in northern Afghanistan.
Next week, we will watch the film again and think more deeply about the question:
How does where we are born and where we live affect the opportunities we have?
This will give us an interesting opportunity to make a global connection with our inquiry into Nagano and compare how geography, history, culture and society can influence people’s lives in very different places around the world.
英語 — 場所を描写する
英語では、描写表現を使って、場所を生き生きと伝える方法を学んでいます。五感を使った表現、興味深い形容詞、力強い動詞について学び、地域や世界のさまざまな場所を描写した4つの文章を読みました。
それぞれの文章を分析し、書き手がどのように五感に訴える細かな描写を使って、読み手がその場所を想像できるようにしているかを考えました。次回からは、これまで学んだことを活かし、自分たちが知っている場所について、五感を使った描写文を書く練習をしていきます。
理科 — 天気と気温 🌡️
理科では、一日の中で気温がどのように変化するのか、また天気が気温にどのような影響を与えるのかについて調べる活動を始めました。
一日の異なる時間に気温を測定し、結果を記録することで、そこからどのような変化や傾向が見られるのかを調べています。ちょうど一日中ほぼ雨が降り続いた日があり、雨の日のデータも加えることができました。他の天候の日と比較することで、天気と気温の関係について考えるよい機会となりました。
探究・社会 — 私たちの住む場所と時代 🗾
新しい探究ユニット **「Where We Are in Place and Time（私たちの住む場所と時代）」をスタートしました。この学習は、MEXTの社会科で学んでいる「私たちの都道府県」**とも深くつながっています。
今回のユニットでは、次の3つの視点から探究していきます。
- 長野県の地理的・歴史的な特徴
- これらの特徴が、人々の暮らしにどのような影響を与えてきたか
- 地域社会がどのように文化や伝統を守り、変化させていくことができるか
ユニットの導入として、まず日本地図を見ながら、長野県に隣接する都道府県を確認しました。その後、それぞれの都道府県がどのような食べ物で有名なのかについて話し合い、なぜ地域によって生産されるものや有名なものが異なるのかを考えました。
子どもたちは、気候、地形、土壌や天然資源、水、位置、貿易や交通、歴史、文化など、地域の特徴に影響を与えるさまざまな要素を見つけました。
例えば、長崎県の有名なカステラについて調べました。カステラは、長崎の港を通じて日本にやって来たポルトガルの商人や船乗りとの交流によって伝わったお菓子です。この例から、地域の位置、貿易、異なる文化との交流が、その土地の食文化や文化に影響を与えることを学びました。
次回からは、長野県に焦点を当て、私たちの県を特別な場所にしているものは何かを探究していきます。また、長野県の地理的・歴史的な特徴が、人々の暮らし方、働き方、土地の利用方法にどのような影響を与えてきたのかを調べていきます。
グローバルなつながり — Girls Move Mountains ⚽
また、FICTS Sports Cinema Collaborationの一環として、短編映画 Girls Move Mountains を鑑賞しました。この作品では、アフガニスタン北部でサッカー大会に参加する少女や女性たちの姿が描かれています。
次週は、もう一度この映画を鑑賞し、次の問いについてさらに深く考えていきます。
「私たちがどこで生まれ、どこで暮らすかによって、得られる機会はどのように変わるのだろう？」
この映画を通して、私たちが暮らす長野県と世界の別の地域を比較し、場所が人々の暮らしや機会、そしてコミュニティのあり方にどのような影響を与えるのかについて、グローバルな視点から考える機会にしていきます。
