What a busy and exciting week we’ve had in Grade 4!
We began on Monday with our Open Day—thank you to everyone who came along. It was a lovely way to start the week. In class, we also began writing our own spring simile poems, which are now finished and proudly displayed on the wall outside our classroom. Poetry has been a fantastic way for students to experiment with language. It gives them freedom to express themselves, use interesting vocabulary, and play with ideas without worrying too much about perfect grammar.
We also started exploring food chains, linking closely to our science unit. Students researched local examples and investigated what animals such as lizards eat—this answered questions on our Wonder Wall! Along the way, we’ve been building our scientific vocabulary and adding new terms to our repertoire.
On Tuesday, we finished studying I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud and moved on to Winter-Time by Robert Louis Stevenson. This poem has helped us explore rhyme patterns and figurative language. We especially enjoyed the simile comparing snow-covered hills to icing on a cake. We also discussed which parts of the poem we could relate to—many students connected with the idea of feeling cold in winter, especially that moment of hesitation before getting into a bath or shower!
On Wednesday, we began a reading comprehension based on the little ringed plover, a bird studied locally along the Chikuma River. We learned how these birds nest here in spring and summer before migrating to the Philippines for winter. We’ll be finishing this task next week, as attendance has been a little disrupted due to health checks at local schools.
We also learned about decomposers—organisms that break down dead plants and animals and return nutrients to the soil. We even went outside to see what we could find in our own environment!
Thursday was full of energy as we revisited food chains through a Kahoot quiz. Some of the vocabulary was challenging, but students are doing well using their vocabulary sheets to support their learning. The quiz (originally designed for Grade 6!) has been assigned, so students can try again over the weekend if they wish.
We also introduced the features of an information text, such as headings, subheadings, and fact boxes. Students have started creating their own information posters about loaches (dojo fish), which are currently one of our class pets—famously caught in a drain at school! They are using their knowledge of life cycles, seasonal adaptation, and food chains to present clear and engaging information for others to learn from.
Friday was a slightly more relaxed day. We continued working on our posters and reviewed key vocabulary. We also enjoyed reading the humorous poem Homework Stew by Kenn Nesbitt, which inspired students to begin writing their own silly poems. Throughout the week, I’ve shared a few additional fun poems for students to enjoy in their own time—including a very popular “magic toilet” poem! These all come from the Poetry4kids website, which is a fantastic resource for engaging, modern poetry.

今週もとても忙しく、充実した1週間でした！
月曜日はオープンデーからスタートしました。ご参加いただいた皆様、ありがとうございました。とても良いスタートになりました。クラスでは「春」をテーマにしたシミリー（直喩）の詩を書き始め、現在は完成して教室前の廊下に掲示しています。詩は、文法の正確さにあまりとらわれず、自由に表現できる素晴らしい活動です。子どもたちは、さまざまな言葉を使いながら、自分の考えや気持ちをのびのびと表現しています。
また、理科では**食物連鎖（フードチェーン）**の学習を始めました。地域に見られる生き物をもとに調べ学習を行い、トカゲが何を食べるのかについても探究しました。これは「ワンダーウォール」に出てきた疑問のひとつでした。学習を通して、新しい科学用語にもたくさん触れ、語彙を広げています。
火曜日には『I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud（ひとりさまよえば）』の学習を終え、新しく『Winter-Time』という詩に取り組み始めました。この詩では、韻（ライム）や比喩表現について学んでいます。特に、雪に覆われた丘をケーキのアイシングにたとえたシミリーが印象的でした。また、詩の中で共感できる部分についても話し合いました。寒い冬にお風呂に入るときの「ひやっとする感じ」に共感する声も多く聞かれました。
水曜日は、千曲川周辺で観察されている**コチドリ（little ringed plover）**についての説明文読解に取り組みました。この鳥は春から夏にかけて日本で巣を作り、冬にはフィリピンへ渡ることを学びました。この学習は来週も続ける予定です。今週は健康診断の影響で出席が不安定な日もありました。
また、「分解者（デコンポーザー）」についても学びました。分解者とは、枯れた植物や動物を分解し、土に栄養を戻す生き物のことです。実際に外に出て、どんな生き物がいるか探す活動も行いました。
木曜日は、Kahootクイズを使って食物連鎖の復習をしました。少し難しい語彙もありましたが、配布した語彙シートを使いながら頑張っています。このクイズは（実は6年生向けのものですが！）週末にも挑戦できるようにしていますので、ぜひご家庭でも取り組んでみてください。
さらに、説明文の特徴（見出し、小見出し、情報ボックスなど）についても学びました。現在、クラスで飼っているドジョウ（学校の排水溝で見つけたものです！）についてのポスターを作成しています。ライフサイクル、季節による変化、食物連鎖など、これまでの学びを活かして、分かりやすく魅力的にまとめることを目標にしています。他のクラスの子どもたちにも見てもらい、学べるような掲示物を目指しています。
金曜日は少しリラックスした雰囲気で過ごしました。ポスター作りを進めたり、語彙の復習をしたりしました。また、『Homework Stew（宿題シチュー）』というユーモアたっぷりの詩を読み、それをもとに自分たちのオリジナルの詩作りにも取り組み始めました。今週は授業とは別に、子どもたちが自由に読める楽しい詩もいくつか紹介しています。「魔法のトイレ」の詩は特に人気でした！
