We had a pretty eventful week in Grade 4! 英語の下に日本語訳があります

First, we have officially started gathering materials for our Bug Hotel Project! Over the next two weeks, we hope to collect lots of natural and recycled materials, so let’s all help if we can. The students are very excited to start building and designing together.

During one of our outdoor adventures, we climbed the hill near school and discovered some berry trees. Before I knew it, everyone was happily eating berries straight from the branches after I was assured that they were definitely not poisonous and that “everyone eats them every year!” Thankfully, everyone survived, and it turned out they were just little mulberries! It actually turned into a really fun experience, however we have decied that the students must eat the berries home next time. Please remind your children not to eat berries off trees at school, best to be safe! The children worked together brilliantly, holding branches down for each other and calling friends over whenever they spotted especially ripe berries.

We also had an exciting wildlife moment when Tori caught a lizard right in the middle of eating an insect! It was fascinating to observe up close and tied in perfectly with all of our learning about local ecosystems and food chains.

This week we completed our Animal Information Booklets and then took them over to Grade 1 and Grade 2 to teach the younger students about our local animals. It was a really special experience. The Grade 4 students were proud to show off all of their hard work, and the younger students were excited to learn from their older schoolmates. Aoba, showing her “Risk-Taker” learner profile attribute, bravely presented her information to the whole group!

In English this week, we wrote diary entries from the perspectives of our animal characters. The students used their knowledge of seasonal adaptations and animal behaviour to help make their writing realistic and creative. They combined this with their diary writing skills to imagine what life might be like for their chosen animal throughout the different seasons in Nagano. It was wonderful to see the students using both scientific understanding and creativity together in their writing.

We also got creative this week by making posters using photos from our recent bus trips and creating posters about the IB Learner Profile attribute Caring. The students posed for pictures showing acts of kindness and then wrote captions to match their actions. It was wonderful to see them thinking about how small actions can make a big difference to others. These posters will be displayed around the school, and we will also be exploring the IB Learner Profile attributes further during our school assemblies. We are hoping this helps students better understand how they can demonstrate these important qualities both inside and outside the classroom. 🌟

Mr. Yamagishi caught a snake and put it in a jar. Unfortunately this will not make a good new class pet as wild snakes can have parasites and can become stressed in captivity, refusing to eat.

Next week, we will begin reflecting on our learning before moving into our next transdisciplinary theme: How We Organise Ourselves. Luckily, our Bug Hotel Project bridges perfectly between the two units, as our new theme focuses on taking action within our school, community, and environment.

グレード4では、今週もとても盛りだくさんな一週間を過ごしました！

まず、ついに「バグホテルプロジェクト」の材料集めを始めました！これから2週間ほどかけて、自然の材料やリサイクルできる材料をたくさん集めたいと思っています。できる範囲でぜひご協力ください。子どもたちは、みんなでデザインしたり作ったりすることをとても楽しみにしています。

また、外遊びの時間には学校近くの丘に登り、木になっている実を見つけました。気づいた時には、「毎年みんな食べてるから大丈夫！」と言われ、子どもたちが木から直接パクパク食べていました！幸いみんな無事で、その実は小さな桑の実（マルベリー）でした。とても楽しい体験になりましたが、次回からは学校で木の実を食べないことにしました。安全のため、学校の木になっている実は食べないよう、ご家庭でもお声がけをお願いいたします。子どもたちは、お互いに枝を押さえてあげたり、「こっちにたくさんあるよ！」と友達を呼んだりしながら、協力して楽しんでいました。

さらに、野生動物に関する面白い出来事もありました。Toriさんが、ちょうど昆虫を食べている最中のトカゲを捕まえました！近くで観察することができ、地域の生態系や食物連鎖について学んでいる内容ともぴったりつながる経験となりました。

今週は「動物情報ブックレット」を完成させ、その後グレード1とグレード2のクラスへ行き、地域の動物について紹介しました。グレード4の子どもたちは、自分たちの頑張った成果を見せることができ、とても誇らしそうでした。また、下級生たちもお兄さん・お姉さんから学ぶことを楽しんでいました。Aobaさんは「Risk-Taker（挑戦する人）」の学習者像を発揮し、みんなの前で堂々と発表してくれました！

英語では、動物キャラクターの視点から日記を書きました。子どもたちは、季節による適応や動物の行動について学んだ知識を使いながら、リアルで創造的な文章を書くことができました。長野の季節の中で、その動物がどのように生活しているかを想像しながら、日記形式で表現しました。科学的な理解と創造力の両方を活かした素晴らしい作品になりました。

また今週は、最近のバス旅行の写真を使ったポスター作りや、IB Learner Profile の「Caring（思いやり）」についてのポスター作りにも取り組みました。子どもたちは、親切な行動をしている場面を写真で表現し、それに合ったキャプションを書きました。小さな行動でも周りに大きな良い影響を与えられることについて考える、素敵な機会となりました。これらのポスターは学校内に掲示され、今後の集会でもIB Learner Profileについてさらに学んでいく予定です。教室の中でも外でも、子どもたちがこれらの大切な姿勢を実践できるようになることを願っています。🌟

また、山岸先生がヘビを捕まえて瓶に入れて見せてくれました。しかし、野生のヘビには寄生虫がいる可能性があり、飼育下ではストレスを感じてエサを食べなくなることもあるため、新しいクラスペットには向いていないことも学びました。

来週は、これまでの学びを振り返った後、新しい探究テーマ「How We Organise Ourselves（私たちはどのように組織されているのか）」に入っていきます。バグホテルプロジェクトは、学校や地域、環境のために行動するという新しいテーマにもぴったりつながっています。
