Our Grade 4 students recently took their learning beyond the classroom with an exciting and authentic learning experience at the Matsumoto Clean Center. As part of our inquiry into energy sources, energy transformation, and how people use energy, students had the opportunity to see these concepts in action within their own community.
The visit provided an excellent opportunity for students to explore the central idea of our unit: Energy can come from different sources and change forms to make things happen. At the Clean Center, students investigated how waste can be used as a resource to generate energy and how that energy can then be used by the local community.
This experience encouraged students to explore our specified concepts of energy, transformation, and sustainability. They considered how energy is generated, how it transforms from one form to another, and how energy production and consumption can contribute to a more sustainable community.
Students demonstrated their Learner Profile attributes throughout the visit. As Inquirers, they observed carefully and asked questions about the processes they were seeing. As Thinkers, they made connections between their prior learning and the new information they encountered. They were Communicators as they discussed their ideas with classmates and teachers, and Open-minded learners as they considered different perspectives about energy use and sustainability.
After the Clean Center visit, students enjoyed a picnic and reflection time in the park next to the facility. This gave them an opportunity to slow down, share their thinking, and reflect on how their understanding had developed. Students considered not only what they had learned, but also how the experience had changed or extended their thinking.
The reflection also connected strongly to our Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills. Students practised communication skills when sharing their ideas, social skills through collaboration, thinking skills when making connections and drawing conclusions, and self-management skills as they managed themselves responsibly throughout the trip.
The final part of the day brought our learning full circle as we visited the Lala Pool. Students were able to enjoy a facility that benefits from the energy produced through the Clean Center. This created a powerful real-life connection between the different stages of the energy process.
Students could see that their learning was not simply a concept studied at school. Energy was being transformed at the Clean Center, used within the community, and experienced by the students themselves at the pool. This helped turn an abstract scientific concept into an authentic and meaningful learning experience.
The trip also encouraged students to think about sustainability and responsible action. They began to consider how the choices we make about waste, resources, and energy can have an impact on our communities and environment. These experiences help students recognise that they are not only learners but also members of a wider community who can make informed and responsible choices.
Most importantly, the Lala Trip gave students the opportunity to exercise learner agency. They were active participants in the learning process—observing, questioning, discussing, connecting, and reflecting. By experiencing the complete journey from waste → energy → community use → personal experience, students developed a deeper understanding of how energy systems are connected to our everyday lives.
It was a fantastic day of inquiry, connection, reflection, collaboration, and real-world learning, and a wonderful example of how our Grade 4 students can take their learning beyond the classroom and into the world around them.
