Grade 1, Gets Back To The Future!!

Welcome back! I hope that you all had a great summer break and rested well. We have quite a lot to look forward to in the 2nd term, including or annual Sports Festival, Music concert and more. We also will be looking to add a few new things to what we do in grade 1, such as diary entries and library visits every week.

This week, we began writing our diary entries and the purpose of this is for the students to practice their writing skills, which will also improve spelling and reading. This is also meant to help students reflect on their day and things that they went through.

This week we also had our formative assessment, and the students had to group different images into different groups based on sports types. The sports we explored included, individual, team, combat, extreme and motor sports. This was a fun challenge that the students did well, however, this will spark our interest and learning hole into the world of sports.

This week was also our first library day. We went to the library to borrow some books on sports to link to our unit and learn from. We found some great books that we will be using in our unit, and this will be a great way for the students to enhance their reading ability.

This week the grade 1 students had their health check with the school nurse. The students measured their height and weight, and it is an exciting moment for them to see how they have grown. The students also had a nice lesson on a well balanced diet and how they can also balance this out with the foods that they like such as watermelon and potato chips.

This week we reflected on the phonics combinations that we learned in the first term of our school year and we played a dice game which the students enjoyed and you could also apply at home. There is a starting point and you roll a dice to land on a coloured paper, with a phonics combo. The students have to think about 1 word, using the phonics combination.

This week we also practised and individual sport which is relay running, and we also played a new team game from South Africa, called 3 Can!!! This was a part of our Unit Of Inquiry and we also compared how individual and team sports are different. We also practiced a very important part of our unit, which is sportsmanship and after each game the students displayed good sportsmanship by congratulating each other on a good game.

Today we had our first music class of the new term and we practised some new tunes and the students had some interesting goals to reach for the lesson, such as being able to sing well, work well with others, and what would be their next step. This was pretty good as the students could think about which learner profile attributes they used in the class, such as being risk-takers, and being open-minded. We have also been practising our Sports Festival dance, which will be based around the song, “A million dreams,” which the students chose themselves.

I hope that you had a good and productive weekend, and have nice weekend too. Thank you for your support and guidance as it massively helps us grow! Salutations!
