Explaining How The World Works

Over the past two weeks, we have continued our inquiry into our Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme How the World Works, deepening our understanding of how simple machines and forces help us understand how things move and work. As our inquiry has progressed, we have moved beyond simply learning about scientific concepts and have begun applying our understanding through authentic, hands-on engineering challenges. One of the highlights of our learning has been designing, testing, and refining our own marble runs. Working together, we explored how gravity, friction, slopes, and different materials influence the movement of an object. Every design presented new challenges, encouraging us to think creatively, test our ideas, analyse the results, and make improvements along the way. We quickly discovered that successful designs rarely happen on the first attempt, and that making mistakes is an essential part of the learning process. Each time something did not work as expected, we reflected on the reasons why, discussed possible solutions, and returned to improve our designs with new ideas and greater confidence.

Alongside our marble runs, we also designed gravity towers and investigated friction through our own friction tasting stations. These experiences gave us opportunities to observe scientific concepts in action while developing the habits of mind of scientists, engineers, and designers. We compared different surfaces, investigated how materials affect movement, and made predictions before carrying out our investigations. Throughout every activity, collaboration played a central role. We listened carefully to one another’s ideas, shared responsibilities, solved problems together, and learned that the strongest solutions often come from combining different perspectives. As our projects evolved, so did our confidence in taking risks, asking questions, and thinking critically. Rather than searching for one correct answer, we embraced the idea that inquiry is an ongoing process of wondering, testing, reflecting, and improving. These experiences have helped us strengthen not only our scientific understanding, but also essential Approaches to Learning skills such as communication, collaboration, self-management, research, and creative thinking. Most importantly, they reminded us that some of the richest learning happens when we work together towards a shared goal and enjoy the process of discovering something new.

Another unforgettable highlight of the past two weeks was our Inquiry Fair, where we proudly shared the projects we had designed and developed throughout our Unit of Inquiry. It was an exciting opportunity to celebrate everything we had learned while presenting our thinking to classmates, teachers, families, and other members of our school community. Standing beside our finished projects, we explained how they worked, the scientific concepts behind them, the challenges we faced during the design process, and the improvements we made along the way. Sharing our learning with a real audience gave purpose to all of our hard work and encouraged us to communicate our ideas clearly, confidently, and enthusiastically.

The Inquiry Fair was much more than an exhibition of finished products. It was a celebration of curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and growth. As we visited one another’s displays, we asked questions, exchanged ideas, and celebrated the different approaches each group had taken to solve problems. It was inspiring to see how the same central idea could lead to such a wide variety of creative solutions and innovative designs. Looking around the room, we could see how every project reflected perseverance, teamwork, and countless moments of trial and improvement. The fair reminded us that learning is a journey rather than a destination, and that the process of investigating, designing, testing, reflecting, and refining is just as valuable as the final result. We left feeling proud not only of what we had created, but also of everything we had learned together throughout this inquiry.
