Grade 1 Begin unit 2: Botany!!!

The month of June began with grade 1 starting a new unit, all about plants, Botany! It also came at the right time as last week, during Japanese social studies time the students learned how to and they planted morning glory plants. The main objective was for the students to develop a sense of responsibility and care for a living thing, and the students feel like they are raising something that they will have a connection with. This also came at the right time because we will learn about plants in unit 2. Some students have also been watering and taking notes of their observations as well. Some students have also said that they have dreams about their morning glory, growing tall and big over the clouds.

Music was fun and we enjoyed playing some really good and engaging warm up games that are also very helpful for students to learn music notes. We also sang some songs, a nice morning song to get students ready for school. This could also be very nice for students to sing in the morning, and a great way for students to learn English words and phrases.

The students have had a few things to be excited about this week, such as their growing morning glory plants and this week, we used our laptops for the first time since we received them. It was challenging as there are so many new things that the students. It was fun, especially as the students used their laptops during the creative computing class, and the students were able to create a few things that were fun.

Unit 2 began well for grade 1, and we are currently learning about plants and Botany. In our unit of inquiry, we will focus on the different types of plants, the different parts of a plant and the importance of plants to humans and animals in the world.

On Thursday, we had visitors from the ISN preschool, Milky Way and Rain-forest. We had a good time with the students and the teachers. We played a scavenger hunt outside and returned back to the classrooms to play a game of charades. This was really good for us, and the goal for this was for the preschool students to have a good experience of what elementary students get up to at Gojo Campus. This was good for us all, as the grade 1 and 2 students worked well with the preschool students, by communicating clearly with them and being caring to our visitors.

This week, we also continued to learn about plants and this week we particularly focused on trees and flowers. We are quite lucky to have a number of variety of plants around Gojo Campus, which makes it better to connect our classroom learning and what we see outside.

I hope that you have a good weekend, the temperatures have been really good and cool so I hope that you enjoy the nice weather, and the upcoming World Cup! Take care!
