Insect Investigations and Interactions Shooting Star – 8.24-28

A beautiful start to the week unfolded for our Shooting Star students, marking an exciting milestone in their Unit of Inquiry with the incredible transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. The students were thrilled to witness the wonderful changes in nature firsthand as the chrysalis changed color from green to black. Just a few hours later a stunning swallowtail butterfly popped out of its chrysalis. Everyone was excited to observe this fascinating change up close. The journey isn’t over yet! A second caterpillar has also made its chrysalis, and our students are eagerly waiting for its big reveal. This hands-on experience has led to a lot of inquiry and knowledgeable students.

As students explore the Unit of Inquiry both inside the classroom and outdoors, they have been practicing important skills that they can use anywhere they go. Now that everyone is back at school together, they had a fun time using their handmade nets to catch all kinds of interesting insects and CVC words. They shared the words and insects that they caught with each other and the teachers. They also used their handmade magnifying glasses to work as a team on a hidden images hunt coloring page. They communicated well and helped each other find all the hidden objects before happily coloring the buggy scene together.

Later, they thought about how insects move and copied those movements while playing a Roll and Move dice game, followed by a fun dance full of marching, flying, and crawling. To show what they had learned, they sorted different insects into the correct jars, proudly demonstrating their new knowledge.

Shooting Star students happily finished wrapping up their Fish Streamers, which beautifully display their cute, shimmering swimming fish!

Shooting Star students have also continued to practice their conversation skills by sharing activities, special events and milestones from their lives with each other, like new siblings, birthdays and going to festivals. They also are looking at funny pictures to ask and questions to learn more about one another!

Adding to the joy of the week, everyone learned new choreography in Dance class, bringing energy and movement to their day. And, everyone enjoyed one last waterplay before the start of autumn.  It’s been a week full of discovery, growth, and celebration.
