Shooting Star Summer Send-Off: Welcome Back!- 8.17-21

Sharing Summer Stories

The week began with a warm and engaging Show and Tell. Each student took turns sharing their favorite summer activities, creating a positive space for storytelling and listening. Please, refresh your students’ listening skills and ask what they remember about other classmates’ holidays.  To add a creative twist later, they used clay to make models of the various treats they enjoyed during the holidays, like ice cream, noodles and BBQ skewers. This hands-on activity sparked wonderful conversations about their favorite foods and memorable moments from the summer break.

In Phonics, the Shooting Star students revisited important letter sounds and practiced two sight words to boost their reading confidence. Then, they took turns speaking about playful and funny pictures, like At the Zoo and In the Shop. They discussed what they could see in each image, what the characters were doing, and what they liked in the scenes. This led to an interactive question-and-answer session where the students asked each other thoughtful questions such as “What animal do you like?”  “Which clothes do you want to wear?” and “Which toy do you like?” This not only reinforced their language skills but also encouraged caring social interactions, as each student had to report what their friend said.

Crafting Creativity and Collaboration

To jump back into the Unit of Inquiry, the students joined forces with the Milky Way class to fold origami beetles. Following this, they designed and created unique craft houses for their beetles. Some students showed impressive creativity by adding special features like beetle food and tiny bathrooms. They thought carefully about what their beetles would need to live happily and comfortably. This collaborative project fostered teamwork, imagination, and a deeper understanding of caring for living things.

Enjoying the Summer’s Last Splash

Although summer is slowly coming to an end, the students are making the absolute most of the warm, sunny days left. Their favorite way to cool off and enjoy the outdoors is through water and pool play, which brings fun and laughter. In Shooting Star, the students celebrated the summer with a special touch of creativity. To balance summer play coming to a natural end, and learning about small creatures for the UOI, they crafted a fluttering mobile decorated with tiny shiny fish. The still heat of summer will pick up speed and let their decorative mobiles flutter in the autumn breeze.
