🏺 Exploring Ancient Egypt

On Monday, we visited the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum to see the special Egyptian exhibition from the Brooklyn Museum. Unfortunately, the exhibition was very crowded, so it was sometimes difficult to get a really good look at the displays. However, we still managed to see some fascinating objects and learn some interesting things about life in Ancient Egypt.

One fact that really surprised us was the estimated life expectancy of around 29–33 years. We also learned that women often had shorter lives because of the dangers associated with childbirth. When we think about how different life was, it is easy to understand why ideas about death and the afterlife were such an important part of Ancient Egyptian culture.

We saw some beautiful and unusual objects, including a low table and wooden headrest, which reminded us of some traditional Japanese furniture. We also admired beautifully decorated jewellery, impressive sarcophagi and intricate limestone carvings. It was a great opportunity to connect our learning about different cultures and communities with real historical objects.

🏔️ Becoming Nagano Experts

On Tuesday, we continued working on our writing and practising for our upcoming PICTS presentations. With the presentations getting closer, the students have been putting in lots of effort to prepare.

We also started a short Nagano Expert research project. Working in pairs, the students became experts on different aspects of Nagano:

  • 🏔️ Mountains and rivers
  • 🏭 Industries
  • 🏙️ Major cities and where people live
  • 🗺️ Regional differences

The students researched their topics, created posters and then used their posters to teach each other. This activity continued into Wednesday and Thursday, giving everyone a chance to practise researching, collaborating, presenting and communicating information.

🏃 Sports Day Preparation

On Thursday, we also got creative and made some banners to help decorate and support Sports Day.

On Friday, we went over to support the preschool Sports Day. The G4 students enjoyed watching the younger children take part — and even joined in with one of the games!

Afterwards, it was time for our usual swimming session, which was a fun way to finish a very busy week.

With the FICTS presentations coming up soon, we don’t have much time left, so the students have been working particularly hard this week. There has been lots of research, writing, practising, presenting and teamwork!

Well done, G4! And enjoy Silver Week! 🎌
