This Week in Grade 4
🌡️ Science & Maths
This week in Science, we became temperature researchers! We investigated the highest and lowest recorded temperatures in both Japan and around the world, and thought about the different factors that may have contributed to these extreme temperatures.
We also explored an interesting question: Why might two thermometers in the same town, at the same time, show different temperatures? The students discovered that there are many factors that can affect temperature, such as sunlight, wind, location and the surface being measured.
Along the way, we also practised important Maths vocabulary connected to graphs, data and data handling, helping us become more confident at describing and interpreting information.
✏️ English
In English, we have been working on making our writing more interesting by using powerful verbs and interesting adjectives. The students practised moving beyond simple sentences and adding details that help the reader create a clearer picture in their mind.
🎬 PICTS Presentations
On Wednesday, the students continued working on their PICTS presentations. They decided to take a slightly different approach and present on the different films rather than following their original plan.
It was a change relatively late in the process, but the students discussed it together, agreed on the new direction and are all putting in their best effort. Sometimes taking a risk and trying something different can pay off!
🏔️ Learning About Nagano
We are also getting ready to begin a new research, poster and presentation activity about Nagano Prefecture, connected to the MEXT curriculum. The students will research different aspects of Nagano and then teach their classmates what they have discovered.
To get us started, we watched a video about Nagano before heading off to swimming class. It was a great way to begin thinking about our local geography, industries, cities and unique regional features.

And, of course, swimming was a lot of fun as usual! The students enjoyed getting into the pool, practising their skills and finishing the week with some active learning.

今週もG4では、楽しく充実した学びの一週間となりました！
🌡️ 理科・算数
今週の理科では、**「気温リサーチャー」**になって、気温について調べる活動を行いました。
日本と世界で記録された最高気温と最低気温を調べ、そのような極端な気温が記録された背景には、どのような要因があったのかについて考えました。
また、**「同じ町で、同じ時間に測っているのに、2つの温度計が違う気温を示すことがあるのはなぜ？」**という問いについても考えました。日光、風、測定する場所や地面の状態など、気温に影響を与えるさまざまな要因があることを学びました。
さらに、グラフやデータを扱う際に使う算数の用語も練習し、データを読み取ったり、説明したりする力を身につけています。
✏️ 英語
英語では、より興味深く、詳しい文章を書くために、面白い形容詞や表現を使う練習をしました。
単純な文章だけではなく、言葉を付け加えることで、読み手がその場所や様子をより具体的に想像できる文章を作ることに取り組んでいます。
🎬 PICTSプレゼンテーション
水曜日には、PICTSのプレゼンテーションの準備を進めました。
ここにきて、子どもたちは少し方向を変え、最初に予定していた内容ではなく、それぞれ違う映画について発表することに決めたようです。
少し遅い段階での変更ではありましたが、子どもたち自身で話し合って新しい方向性に納得し、みんなが一生懸命取り組んでいます。
時には、思い切って新しいことに挑戦することが、良い結果につながることもありますね！
🏔️ 長野について学ぼう
これからMEXT（文部科学省）のカリキュラムに沿って、長野県について調べ、ポスターを作り、クラスで発表する活動を始めます。
それぞれが長野県のさまざまな地域や産業、特徴について調べ、最終的には自分が学んだことをクラスメートに教えることを目指します。
その準備として、水泳の授業の前に長野県についての動画を見ました。私たちが暮らしている地域について、改めて考える良いきっかけになりました。

そして、もちろん今週も水泳はいつも通りとても楽しかったです！
子どもたちはプールで楽しく活動しながら、それぞれの泳ぐ力を伸ばすことができました。
