It’s October and the Waterfall students have completed their unit 2 reflection, and have begun their new unit on “How We Express Ourselves”!
This week our young learners dived in to the subject of emotions, feelings and expression using songs and dances. Our morning circle songs ALL changed! Where before we had simple, slightly slow songs for days of the week, months of the year, seasons etc, so that students could get used to the words and the rhythms. Now we have faster, more active songs. And guess what? The Waterfall class has learned them so quickly! Great job everyone!
Apart from our morning circle songs, we have being looking towards later in the month when we will have our Halloween party. We combined this theme, with the theme of our unit of inquiry, to sing and dance focussing on our facial expressions, and what kind of emotions we can show with our body. Learners learnt words like “pouting”, “grumpy”, “scary”, spooky”. And we matched those words to different forms of kinaesthetic expression. At home, maybe you can ask your children to show you what a grumpy dance might look like!
To celebrate the progression of autumn, students also made their own acorns. They used their fine motor skills to fold origami paper, using seven careful steps. After they finished, learners used pencils and crayons to add some personality and expressions to their acorns. We connected feelings and emotions to the rhythms of nature!
Next week will be Mr Jimmy’s last week with Waterfall before he movesto Grade 3 in ISN Gojo Elementary Campus. But don’t feel down, because he will still stop by Shimauchi to see your growth and progress. So let’s make the most our of our last week together!
