This week in Rainforest, we began our new Unit of Inquiry under How We Organize Ourselves with the central idea: Teamwork enables people to achieve common goals.

今週のRainforestクラスでは、「How We Organize Ourselves（私たちはどのように組織するのか）」の探究が始まりました。セントラルアイデアは「チームワークによって、人々は共通の目標を達成することができる」です。

To tune in to the unit, the children took part in a Tower Challenge, where they worked in small teams to build the tallest tower using limited materials. At the beginning, they were excited to connect the pasta pieces and eagerly started building with the goal of creating a tower. Many of them were fully engaged and enjoyed the challenge. However, as the activity progressed, we noticed that several students were working more individually than collaboratively. Some groups appeared to be making progress at first, but eventually found it difficult to keep their structures standing. As time went on, many teams paused, looked at one another, and realized that completing the challenge would not be easy.

ユニットの導入として、子どもたちは「タワーチャレンジ」に取り組みました。限られた材料を使い、小さなグループでできるだけ高いタワーを作る活動です。最初は、パスタをつなげることにワクワクしながら、タワーを作ることを目標に意欲的に活動していました。多くの子どもたちは夢中になってチャレンジを楽しんでいました。

しかし、活動が進むにつれて、協力するというよりも、一人ひとりが個別に作業を進めている場面が見られました。最初は順調に進んでいるように見えたグループも、次第にタワーを立たせ続けることが難しくなり、多くのチームが途中で手を止め、お互いの様子を見ながら、このチャレンジは簡単ではないことに気づいていきました。

After the activity, we gathered together to reflect on the experience. The children shared their thoughts openly:

活動後には、みんなで振り返りを行い、子どもたちは次のような感想を話してくれました。

Kihoko: “It was fun.”
Kanata: “It was exciting.”
Louis: “It was nice.”
Shun: “Everyone thought time was short.”
Louis: “Not enough pasta.”
Emma: “We don’t have too much tape.”

・Kihoko：「楽しかった。」
・Kanata：「ワクワクした。」
・Louis：「よかった。」
・Shun：「みんな時間が短いと思った。」
・Louis：「パスタが足りなかった。」
・Emma：「テープがあまりなかった。」

During our reflection, the children mostly focused on the materials and time as the reasons why the challenge was difficult. They felt that the limited pasta, tape, and time made it hard for them to complete the tower successfully. As we continue this unit, we will explore how working together, listening to one another, and sharing responsibilities can help a team achieve a common goal.

振り返りでは、多くの子どもたちが、活動が難しかった理由として「材料」と「時間」に注目していました。パスタやテープ、時間が限られていたため、タワーを完成させることが難しかったと感じていました。今後の探究では、「協力すること」「友達の話を聞くこと」「役割を分担すること」が、チームとして共通の目標を達成するためにどのように役立つのかについて考えていきます。

As we began discussing the question “What is a team?”, the children shared many thoughtful ideas based on their own experiences and observations. Niki explained that team is “nakama” in Japanese, while Emma said that a team means helping each other. Shinwa described a team as any group of people, and Kanata shared that although everyone is different, a team helps people and that many kinds of teams can be created. The children also recognized that teamwork is important because doing things alone can be tiring. Shun and Kihoko both reflected that it is hard to manage everything by yourself, while Emma pointed out that if you need help, you can ask a teammate. Louis made a meaningful connection to the wider community by explaining that even farmers need a team, because without teamwork, people would not have food. The children also identified that a family can be a team.

「チームとは何だろう？」という問いについて話し合う中で、子どもたちは自分たちの経験や考えをもとに、さまざまな意見を共有しました。Nikiさんは「チームは『仲間』という意味」と説明し、Emmaさんは「助け合うこと」と話しました。Shinwaさんは「人が集まったグループ」と表現し、Kanataさんは「みんな違うけれど、人を助けることができるし、いろいろなチームが作れる」と話してくれました。

また、子どもたちは「一人ですると大変だから、チームワークは大切」ということにも気づいていました。ShunさんとKihokoさんは「一人で全部やるのは大変」と話し、Emmaさんは「困ったときはチームメイトに助けてもらえる」と伝えてくれました。さらにLouisさんは、「農家さんにもチームが必要で、チームワークがなければ食べ物は作れない」と話し、地域社会とのつながりにも目を向けた素晴らしい考えを共有してくれました。また、「家族もチームの一つである」という意見も出ました。

When we explored the question “What does teamwork mean?”, the children described it as working together, helping each other, thinking together, asking teammates for help, and using communication skills. Through these discussions, the children began building their understanding that teamwork is not only about being in a group, but also about supporting one another and working together toward a common purpose.

さらに、「チームワークとは何だろう？」という問いについては、「一緒に取り組むこと」「助け合うこと」「一緒に考えること」「困ったときにチームメイトに助けを求めること」「コミュニケーションスキルを使うこと」といった意見が挙がりました。これらの話し合いを通して、子どもたちはチームワークとは単にグループに所属することではなく、お互いを支え合い、共通の目的に向かって協力することであるという理解を深め始めています。
