It was another exciting week in Savanna as the children continued learning, practicing new skills, and making discoveries through different experiences. From strengthening their phonics and writing skills to observing small creatures in nature, the children showed curiosity and perseverance throughout the week.
On Monday, we had our CVC word reading assessment through one of their favorite games—Musical Chairs! No one was eliminated from the game. When the music stopped, the children took turns reading the CVC word on their seat. Everyone did a great job reading the words and had lots of fun dancing along to their favorite music. 🎶 We also had our writing lesson and focused on writing the lowercase letter /p/. Each student had an opportunity to practice and demonstrate how to form the letter. We also assessed their writing individually to see how clearly and accurately they could write. It was a great opportunity to observe each child’s progress and identify areas where they may need more practice. We also reviewed our reading sight words and went on a sight-word hunt in our books. The Savanna students were very excited whenever they spotted a sight word they recognized and proudly read it aloud. It was wonderful to see their growing confidence and excitement as they connected the words they have been learning with real books. 📚✨

On Thursday, we went for a walk along the river for the first time in a while. As always, the small creatures around us quickly caught the children’s attention! They enjoyed watching beautiful butterflies and bees sipping nectar from flowers and excitedly searched for small creatures near the river. They also took some time to simply relax by the river, watching the water flow and observing the things they could see in and around the water. It was a peaceful moment for the children to slow down, enjoy nature, and notice the little details around them. 🦋🐝🌿

These real-life experiences connected naturally with our Sharing the Planet inquiry. As we continue learning about small creatures and ways we can care for them, Savanna students finally finished creating their posters about ways to care for small creatures. After presenting their posters in class, we asked the children how they could share their knowledge with others. They came up with their own ideas: they wanted to display their posters and visit the Rainforest class to teach them how to care for small creatures. With this purpose in mind, the children became even more eager to improve their presentations and share what they had learned. We invited the Rainforest class to the library, where Savanna students proudly shared what they had learned throughout our UOI. They did a wonderful job presenting their ideas, and it was lovely to see how happy and interested the Rainforest students were to listen to them. This was a meaningful opportunity for our Savanna students to take agency by sharing their knowledge and taking action to help others care for small creatures. 🌱

Through these experiences, Savanna children continue to develop their skills, take on challenges, and become more aware of the small creatures around them. We are so proud of their curiosity, confidence, and willingness to share their learning with others. We look forward to seeing where their curiosity takes them next! Thank you for reading our blog and have a wonderful weekend!🌱🐞🦋
