All About Caring for the Earth

Caring for the Earth is at the heart of our first Unit of Inquiry. To begin, we explored a series of images showing pollution and environmental challenges as our provocation. The inquirers were immediately drawn in and began sharing thoughtful observations:

「地球を大切にすること」は、私たちの最初の探究ユニットの中心となるテーマです。はじめに、子どもたちは汚染や環境問題に関するいくつかの写真を見て、学びのきっかけとしました。RFクラスの探究者たちはすぐに興味をもち、それぞれが感じたことや気づいたことを、お友だちと共有し始めました。

“The garbage is making the water dirty.”
“The smoke is bad for our health.”
“We should take care of the planet because we are from Earth. We live here.”

We valued these ideas and used them to guide our introduction to the central idea:
People’s choices can help care for the Earth.

To build on their thinking, we explored what “choices” mean. The students shared that choices can be good or bad, and they eagerly gave examples of actions that help or harm the Earth. Their ideas helped shape our early discussions and direction for learning.

「ごみが水を汚してしまっているよ。」
「煙は私たちの体によくないよ。」
「私たちは地球に住んでいるから、地球を大切にしないといけないと思う。」

子どもたちからは、このような素直で大切な気づきの声が聞かれました。私たちは一つひとつの考えを大切に受け止めながら、中心となる考えである「人々の選択が地球を大切にすることにつながる」という学びへとつなげていきました。

さらに子どもたちの考えを深めるために、「選択（choices）」とは何かについても一緒に考えました。子どもたちは、「選択には良いものとそうでないものがある」と気づき、地球にとって良い行動や、反対に負担をかけてしまう行動について、意欲的に例を挙げてくれました。

こうした子どもたちの豊かな発想や言葉が、これからの話し合いや学びの方向を形づくる大切な一歩となっています。

To nurture their curiosity further, the class visited the library to explore books connected to our theme. The students excitedly pointed out environmental problems they noticed in the books and shared their discoveries with one another and with their teachers. These shared moments helped deepen their understanding and raised new questions.

子どもたちの好奇心をさらに育むために、図書館へ行き、今回のテーマに関連する本を探してみました。子どもたちは本の中に見つけた環境問題に目を輝かせながら気づきを伝え合い、友だち同士や先生とも発見を共有していました。

こうした共有のひとときが、理解をより深めるとともに、新たな問いを生み出すきっかけとなっています。

To make their thinking visible, the students recorded their observations and posted them on our inquiry wall. This space continues to grow as a reflection of their ideas, questions, and learning journey.

As the students showed readiness, we explored their prior knowledge. Some had already heard of “recycling,” though they were still beginning to understand how it connects to real-life actions. From their curiosity, we were able to introduce our first Line of Inquiry: the purpose of the 3Rs.

To explore this further, the students were invited to sort different materials into three categories. They approached the task with confidence and curiosity, making their own decisions as they tested their ideas. Some students supported their peers by sharing their understanding:

“Recycle means to make something new.”
“Reuse means to use it again.”
“Reduce means to use less, not too much.”

These shared understandings helped the class build a deeper and more collective meaning of the 3Rs.

Following the activity, the students began asking thoughtful questions, which are now displayed on our wall. These questions are helping guide the direction of our inquiry as we continue exploring how our choices can care for the Earth.

At this stage, the students are beginning to take ownership of their learning by sharing ideas, asking questions, and making simple choices during activities. These moments of student voice and choice are shaping the way we move forward in our inquiry.

子どもたちの考えを「見える化」するために、自分たちの気づきを記録し、探究ウォールに掲示しました。このスペースは、子どもたちのアイデアや疑問、学びの歩みを映し出す場として、今も少しずつ広がり続けています。

子どもたちの準備が整ってきたところで、これまでに知っていること（事前知識）についても探りました。「リサイクル」という言葉をすでに知っている子もいましたが、それが実際の行動とどのようにつながるのかは、まだこれから理解を深めていく段階です。こうした子どもたちの興味関心をもとに、最初の探究の柱である「3Rの目的」へと学びを広げていきました。

さらに理解を深めるために、さまざまな素材を3つのカテゴリーに分ける活動にも取り組みました。子どもたちは自信と好奇心をもって取り組み、自分の考えを試しながら主体的に選択していました。また、友だちに自分の理解を伝えて支える姿も見られました。

「リサイクルは、新しいものに作りかえることだよ。」
「リユースは、もう一度使うこと。」
「リデュースは、使いすぎないこと、少なく使うこと。」

こうした言葉の共有を通して、クラス全体で3Rについての理解をより深めていくことができました。

活動の後には、子どもたちからさらに多くの素敵な疑問が生まれ、それらは現在探究ウォールに掲示されています。これらの問いが、これからの探究の方向を導き、「自分たちの選択がどのように地球を大切にすることにつながるのか」という学びをさらに深めてくれています。

この段階では、子どもたちは自分の考えを伝えたり、問いをもったり、活動の中で小さな選択をしたりと、学びに主体的に関わり始めています。こうした「子どもの声」と「選択」の積み重ねが、これからの探究を形づくっています。

✏️ Building Connections Through Phonics

Alongside our Unit of Inquiry, the students continue to strengthen their literacy skills through our phonics learning. This week, we revisited the alphabet and their sounds, making connections to how letters help us read and express our ideas.

We also reviewed the concept of CVC words, and it was wonderful to see how much the students have grown. They eagerly shared the words they know and confidently attempted to spell them on their own. Compared to their time in Savanna, their independence and confidence in reading and writing have noticeably developed.

As we move forward, the students are getting ready to begin reading RAZ books that include not only CVC and familiar “jump out” words, but also longer and new vocabulary. This next step will continue to support their growth as communicators and thinkers, helping them make meaning from what they read.

✏️ フォニックスを通したつながりづくり

探究ユニットと並行して、フォニックスの学びを通して読み書きの力も伸ばしています。今週はアルファベットとその音を振り返り、どのように文字を読むのか、自分の考えを表現することにつながるのかを確認しました。

また、CVCワード（子音・母音・子音の3文字でできた単語）についても復習しました。子どもたちがこれまでにどれだけ成長しているかが感じられる場面が多く見られ、自分の知っている言葉を嬉しそうに共有したり、自信をもって書こうとしたりする姿が印象的でした。Savannaで過ごしていた頃と比べても、読み書きに対する自立心や自信が大きく育っていることが感じられます。

これからは、CVCワードや見慣れた「ジャンプアウトワード」だけでなく、より長い単語や新しい語彙も含まれるRAZブックの読みへと進んでいきます。このステップを通して、子どもたちは読み取る力を高め、コミュニケーターとして、そして考える人としてさらに成長していきます。

🌱 Growing Independence and Responsibility

It has been a wonderful week of learning. We are beginning to see the students show more independence in their daily routines, needing fewer reminders as they make thoughtful choices on their own.

🌱 自立と責任の育ち

今週も、たくさんの学びにあふれた素晴らしい一週間となりました。日々のルーティンの中で、子どもたちは少しずつ自分で考えて行動できるようになり、声かけがなくても主体的に動ける場面が増えてきています。こうした姿から、自立心と責任感の育ちを感じています。

These small but meaningful moments connect closely to our Unit of Inquiry, as the students begin to understand that their choices matter, not only in the classroom but also in how they care for the world around them.

こうした小さくも意味のある一つひとつの瞬間は、今回の探究ユニットとも深くつながっています。子どもたちは、自分たちの選択が大切であることに少しずつ気づき始めており、それは教室の中だけでなく、自分たちを取り巻く世界をどのように大切にしていくかにもつながっています。

We are excited to continue exploring the 3Rs and to see how the students deepen their understanding of how the world works, and how they can become responsible individuals who care for the planet we all share.

これからも3Rについての探究を続けながら、子どもたちが「世界はどのように成り立っているのか」への理解をさらに深めていくこと、そして、私たちみんなが共有しているこの地球を大切にする責任ある一人ひとりへと成長していく姿を見ることを、私たちはとても楽しみにしています。
