To the parents of the new Grade 2 class here at ISN Gojo, hello!  Nice to meet you!  My name is Josh, and I am beyond excited to work with you and your children to make an AWESOME year together.

First, let me introduce you to the room in which your kids will be exploring many new topics and following their interests.  I admit, I am a bit into sports, and one of the ways I like to think of my class is as if they were a team.  It encourages them to work together, and to accept that different members have different strengths that, when added together, create a whole that is so much stronger than each individual.

At the very least, it gives them an easy way to see why it’s important to work together and support each other, and to discourage in-class disputes, you know?

But to that end, we have a small nod towards the design of sports teams:  the colors, the lettering, and the framing.  But just a hint!  Not everyone is into sports, and that’s perfectly fine as well.  I don’t want anyone to feel alienated or left out because they have other interests.

We have some brand new puzzles and simple games to give the students a chance to use their brains in a different, refreshing way between lessons.  (Now, of course, the hard part is to remind them of our agreement to put everything back properly!) We also have our Chill Zone, for when things become a bit much and a student wants to take a minute to keep things cool and copacetic.

Our extra classes have kicked off as well!  We’ve begun learning the joys of throwing a disc around in PE class.  (You may have noticed from one of the photos above that I have a bit of an interest in frisbee sports!)  We’ve also had our first tastes of music class, in which we learned the classic English children’s song “Old McDonald,” and got exposed to some of the unusual sounds animals make in English.  Do you know what horses say in English?  How about pigs, or turkeys?  If you’re not sure, ask your child!

And the students’ eyes absolutely lit up when they had their first computer-based creation class!  They had, for many, their first exposure to thinking like a programmer, which will be another tool in their growth as problem-solvers.

こんにちは！はじめまして！
ジョシュと申します。皆さまとお子さまと一緒に、とても素晴らしい一年を作っていけることを心から楽しみにしています。

まずは、お子さまたちがこれからたくさんの新しいトピックを探究し、興味を広げていく教室についてご紹介させてください。
実は私は少しスポーツが好きで、クラスのことを「チーム」のように考えるのが好きです。そうすることで、子どもたちが協力し合うこと、そしてそれぞれに違った得意なことがあり、それらを合わせることで、一人ひとりだけの力よりもずっと強い力になるということを感じてもらえるからです。

少なくとも、協力することやお互いを支え合うことの大切さを分かりやすく伝えることができ、教室内でのトラブルを減らす助けにもなると考えています。

その考えから、教室のデザインにはスポーツチームを少しイメージした要素――色使いや文字のスタイル、飾り方など――をほんの少し取り入れています。
とはいえ、あくまで「ほんの少し」です！スポーツが好きでない子ももちろんいますし、それもまったく問題ありません。ほかの興味を持っていることで、誰かが仲間外れのように感じてしまうことがないようにしたいと思っています。

また、新しいパズルやシンプルなゲームもいくつか用意しました。授業の合間に、頭を違った形で使い、リフレッシュできる機会になると思います。（もちろん一番大変なのは、「使ったものは元の場所に戻す」という約束を思い出してもらうことですが！）
さらに、「チルゾーン（Chill Zone）」もあります。少し気持ちがいっぱいになったときに、短い時間落ち着いて気持ちを整えるためのスペースです。

特別授業もスタートしました！
体育の授業では、ディスク（フリスビー）を投げて楽しむ活動を始めました。（上の写真の中に、私がフリスビースポーツに少し興味がある様子が写っていたかもしれませんね！）
音楽の授業では、英語の定番の子どもの歌「Old McDonald（オールド・マクドナルド）」を学び、英語での動物の鳴き声にも触れました。
英語では馬は何と鳴くかご存じですか？では、ぶたや七面鳥はどうでしょう？もし分からなければ、ぜひお子さまに聞いてみてくださいね！

そして、コンピューターを使った創作の授業では、子どもたちの目が本当に輝いていました！多くの子にとって、プログラマーのように考える体験は初めてでしたが、これはこれから問題解決力を伸ばしていくための新しい大切なツールになると思います。

皆さまと一緒に、素晴らしい一年を過ごせることをとても楽しみにしています。
