As a kid growing up in rural North Carolina, TV options were limited to 4 channels. Fortunately, one of those channels carried Sesame Street, one of the best children’s shows out there with some of the catchiest kids’ songs. Think Pitagora’s Switch only with Muppets. Anyway, one of the common songs was about community members and helpers, the “people in your neighborhood.”
I jumped at the chance to share this modern update to a childhood classic, and it kickstarted our discussion of community members and how they help the community. This discussion led to our current project, designing our own community! First, we reviewed what kind of buildings, shops, services, and so on we thought were important to a community. Then the students formed their town planning councils — they were able to create their own equal groups. And from there, the students started designing the rough drafts of their maps.
Rare are the activities where the students actually ask me if they can work on it some more, but this one was drawing rave reviews from a very critical crowd!
That brings us to where we are today, taking that rough draft and plotting it out onto a bigger, proper map-sized sheet of paper!

We’re wrapping up UOI 1, and will soon be jumping straight into UOI 2. This is one I have been looking forward to very much, as it touches directly onto a personal interest of mine that I am super excited to share with the kids. What is it? Stay tuned!

子どものころ、私はアメリカのノースカロライナ州の田舎で育ちました。当時、テレビで見られるチャンネルはたったの4つ！でも幸運なことに、そのうちの1つで『セサミストリート』という、とても素晴らしい子ども向け番組が放送されていました。楽しくて覚えやすい歌がたくさんあって、子どもたちに大人気の番組です。日本でいうと、「ピタゴラスイッチ」にマペットたちが登場するようなイメージでしょうか。さて、その番組の中でもよく流れていたのが、「町の中で働く人たち」についての歌でした。
今回、その懐かしい名曲の現代版を子どもたちに紹介するチャンスがあり、それをきっかけに「地域で働く人たち」や「コミュニティを支える人たち」について話し合いを始めました。
そして、その話し合いから現在のプロジェクト、「自分たちのコミュニティを作ろう！」へとつながっています！
まずは、「コミュニティにはどんな建物やお店、サービスが必要だと思う？」ということをみんなで振り返りました。その後、子どもたちは自分たちでグループを作り、“町づくりチーム” を結成！ そこから、それぞれのグループでコミュニティマップの下書きを作り始めました。
「もっと続きをやってもいいですか？」と子どもたちの方からお願いしてくる活動は、実はなかなか珍しいのですが、今回はかなり厳しめ（！）な子どもたちからも大好評でした！
そして現在は、その下書きをもとに、大きな本格的な地図用紙へと清書を進めているところです！

UOI 1もいよいよまとめの時期となり、まもなくUOI 2へ進みます。次のユニットは、私自身がとても楽しみにしている内容で、個人的にも大好きなテーマに深く関わっています。子どもたちと共有できることに、今からとてもワクワクしています！
