Greetings!

Our new Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme Sharing the Planet has begun with great excitement and curiosity. Our central idea, “People’s choices can help care for the Earth,”guided us as we explored how our actions impact the environment.

Sharing the Planet（地球を大切にしよう）」をテーマにした新しい探究ユニットが始まりました。子どもたちは、楽しみながら興味をもって活動に参加しています。
「人々の選択は、地球を大切にすることにつながる」という考えをもとに、日々の生活の中での行動が、環境にどのようにつながっているのかを、子どもたちなりに考えました。

To spark students’ thinking, we began with a provocation—a messy classroom! Students entered the classroom with garbage around, observed and shared their thoughts and feelings about what they saw. This led to meaningful discussions about responsibility and care for our environment. Afterward, students expressed their understanding by drawing two scenes: a messy classroom and a clean classroom. Their illustrations clearly showed their growing awareness of how our choices affect the classroom. We then introduced the concept of waste through a fun cut-and-paste activity where students sorted items into “waste” and “not waste.” This helped them begin to think critically about what we throw away and why. It was wonderful to see students demonstrating their understanding and becoming knowledgeable learners. One student shared a meaningful idea: she explained that old clothes can be reused by sharing them with others. This thoughtful insight showed not only her understanding of reuse, but also her awareness of caring for both people and the planet.

子どもたちの考えを引き出すために、まずは「プロボケーション（きっかけ）」として、わざと散らかったクラスルームを用意しました。クラスルームに入った子どもたちは、周りをよく観察し、見たことや感じたことをそれぞれ言葉にして伝えてくれました。そこから、「自分たちの責任」や「環境を大切にすること」について、自然と話し合いが広がっていきました。

その後、子どもたちは「散らかった教室」と「きれいな教室」の2つの場面を絵に描き、自分たちの気づきを表現しました。絵からは、私たちの選択や行動が自分たちのクラスルームの環境に影響することへの理解が少しずつ深まっている様子が伝わってきました。

次に、「ごみ」について考える活動として、切って貼る楽しいワークシートアクティビティを行い、「ごみ」と「ごみではないもの」に分別する作業をしました。何を捨てるのか、そしてなぜ捨てるのか、もう一度使えるのかなどを考える良いきっかけとなりました。

活動の中で、子どもたちが学んだことをしっかりと表現し、知識を深めていく姿が見られました。中でも印象的だったのは、「小さくなった服は、ほかの人にあげて使ってもらえるよ」と話してくれた子どもの言葉です。これは「リユース（再利用）」への理解だけでなく、人や地球を思いやる気持ちが育っていることを感じさせてくれる、とても素敵な気づきでした。

We visited the Rainbow class where students confidently introduced themselves. They were then given the special task of choosing one student, remembering their name, and taking them to the birthday party, which was held in the music room. This activity encouraged students to build connections and practice their social and communication skills. One of Milky Way students turned 6, and everyone had a wonderful time during the celebration. She confidently answered questions about her name and age, showing that she is a strong communicator. It was lovely to see her express herself so clearly and proudly in front of her peers. Thank you, Shooting Star teachers for hosting the birthday party!

Rainbowクラスを訪問し、子どもたちは自信をもって自己紹介をしました。その後、「一人お友だちを選び、名前を覚えて一緒にお誕生日会へ連れて行く」という特別なミッションに挑戦しました。お誕生日会はミュージックルームで行われ、子どもたちはとても嬉しそうでした。この活動を通して、お友だちとのつながりを深めたり、小さな子の面倒を見ようとする姿勢、そして社会性やコミュニケーション力を育むことができました。

また、Milky Wayクラスのお友だちが6歳のお誕生日を迎え、みんなで楽しい時間を過ごしました。名前や年齢についての質問にもはっきりと答える姿から、自分の気持ちや考えをしっかり伝えられる「コミュニケーター」としての成長が感じられました。お友だちの前で、誇らしげに自分を表現する姿がとても素敵でした。

We conducted an earthquake drill, where our five Milky Way students showed great responsibility by leading the safety reminder “o-ha-shi-mo.” The drill went smoothly, and students demonstrated good listening and cooperation skills.

地震を想定した避難訓練を行いました。Milky Wayクラスの5名の子どもたちは、「お・は・し・も」の安全確認の合言葉をリードし、責任感をもって取り組んでくれました。訓練は落ち着いてスムーズに進み、子どもたちは先生の話をよく聞き、お友だちと協力しながら行動することができました。

In our Phonics lesson, students watched a CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) video, read CVC words together, and completed a worksheet by writing the correct CVC words for the pictures shown. They are becoming more confident in recognizing and writing simple words.

フォニックスのレッスンでは、CVC（子音・母音・子音）の動画を見たり、みんなでCVCの単語を読んだりしました。その後、絵を見て正しいCVCの単語を書くワークシートにも取り組みました。活動を通して、子どもたちは簡単な単語を読むことや書くことに、少しずつ自信をつけてきています。

During our writing activity, we reviewed “falling letters” to support correct letter formation. Then, students practiced writing their full names on the baseline. They focused on using uppercase letters at the beginning of their first name and family name, leaving appropriate space between them.

ライティングの活動では、正しい文字の形につなげるために「フォーリングレター（下にのびる文字）」の確認をしました。その後、ベースラインを意識しながら、自分の名前（名前と苗字）を書く練習をしました。名前の最初の文字は大文字にすることや、名前と苗字の間に適切なスペースをあけることにも気をつけて取り組みました。

In our classroom, something exciting is growing—our Wonder Wall. More than just a display, it’s becoming a space where curiosity comes alive and students are encouraged to think deeply about the world around them. The teachers have introduced a powerful way to ask questions using the “5W and 1H” approach: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. These simple question starters help students explore ideas more fully and think from different perspectives. Instead of just looking for answers, students are learning how to ask meaningful questions—and that’s where true learning begins. By encouraging students to ask questions, we are helping them become Inquirers—learners who are curious, engaged, and eager to discover more.

クラスルームでは、子どもたちの「ふしぎ」や「気づき」が集まる Wonder Wall（ワンダーウォール） が少しずつ育っています。これは、ただの掲示ではなく、子どもたちの好奇心が広がり、身の回りの世界について深く考えることができる大切な場所です。

「5W1H（だれ・なに・いつ・どこ・なぜ・どうやって）」を使った質問の仕方を子どもたちに紹介しました。これらのシンプルな言葉は、物ごとをいろいろな角度から考え、理解を深める手助けをしてくれます。

答えを見つけることだけでなく、「よい質問をすること」そのものが大切な学びであることを、子どもたちは少しずつ学んでいます。質問する力を育てることで、子どもたちは好奇心をもって学びに向かう「探究する人（Inquirer）」として成長していきます。

Our very first reading session in class was a special and meaningful experience. It marked the beginning of our journey as readers, full of excitement, focus, and discovery. To start, the teacher introduced to students the book “We Look”. As the teacher read aloud, students listened carefully, following the story and observing how words flow together. This modeled how reading sounds and looks, helping students build confidence. Next, each student received their own copy of the book. With great care and concentration, they began reading independently, using their fingers to point to each word. This simple action helped them stay focused, recognize words, and understand that reading moves from left to right. After practicing on their own, students worked in pairs. Reading together gave them the chance to support one another, share ideas, and build confidence in a friendly and encouraging way. It was wonderful to see students helping each other and enjoying the process. Finally, when they felt ready, students took an important step—they read aloud to the teacher. This moment allowed them to show their progress and celebrate their learning. Through this experience, students demonstrated that they are becoming knowledgeable readers. Learning to read is not just about recognizing words—it is about building understanding, confidence, and a love for learning. This first step is just the beginning of many more reading adventures to come.

クラスでの初めてのリーディングレッスンは、子どもたちにとってとても特別で大切な時間となりました。ワクワクした気持ちの中で、「読む人」としての第一歩を踏み出す、発見にあふれたスタートでした。

はじめに、先生が絵本 「We Look」 を紹介し、読み聞かせを行いました。子どもたちは物語をよく聞きながら、言葉がどのようにつながっていくのかを目で追っていました。読むときの音や姿を見て学ぶことで、安心感と自信につながっていきます。

次に、一人ひとりが自分の本を受け取り、指で文字を追いながら静かに一人読みをしました。指で単語を指すことで、集中しやすくなり、文字の認識や「左から右へ読む」という大切なルールも自然と身についていきます。

その後はペアになって読み合いました。一緒に読むことで、お互いに助け合ったり、気づきを共有したりしながら、楽しく自信を深めることができました。子どもたちが支え合いながら読む姿がとても印象的でした。

最後に、準備ができた子どもたちは、先生の前で音読にも挑戦しました。自分の成長を見せ、学びを喜び合う大切な時間となりました。

この経験を通して、子どもたちは「読む力」を少しずつ身につけ、知識を広げている様子が見られました。読むことは、言葉を知るだけでなく、理解する力や自信、そして学ぶ楽しさを育ててくれます。今回の一歩は、これから続くたくさんの読書の冒険のはじまりです。

Our students continue to enjoy their tennis lessons, which they eagerly look forward to each week. 

子どもたちは、毎週のテニスレッスンをとても楽しみにしており、今回も意欲的に参加していました。体を動かしながら、楽しく学ぶ時間となっています。

Next week, we will continue our exploration of the 3Rs by focusing on REDUCE. Students will deepen their understanding of how making small choices can help lessen waste and protect our planet. We also look forward to more engaging learning experiences in swimming, gym, tennis, and music.
