This week we welcomed back students after Obon Holiday. Despite the slight break, students had no problems getting back to their usual routines. Waterfall is really growing up!
We’ve been going deeper with our inquiry studies about animals, and this time exploring the sounds, names, and movements of animals in song form. We learned three new songs this week! “Walking In the Forest”, “Ocean Animals Song”, “Old Macdonald Had a Farm”. By using these songs we not only got to use our bodies and voices to inquire about the form of animals, each song represented a different habitat that animals require to thrive!
今週は、お盆休み明けに子どもたちが戻ってきました。少しお休みがありましたが、みんな特に問題なく、いつもの生活リズムに戻ることができました。引き続き、動物についての探究もさらに深めています。今回は、歌を通して、動物の鳴き声や名前、動きについて探究しました。

歌いながら、体を動かしたり、声を出したりしながら、動物の特徴について楽しく探究することができます。さらに、それぞれの歌には、動物たちが生きていくために必要な**異なる生息環境（habitat）**が表現されています。歌を楽しみながら、動物たちがどのような場所で暮らしているのかについても学びを深めています。
While not only singing songs about animals, we made craft about the same animals!! We made masks of forest animals, with each student choosing which animal they like the best. We focused on the animals we can see in Nagano’s forests like deer, bears, kamoshika, wild boar etc. We also created huge models of farm animals! Each student had the chance to paint the models outside, and not worry about getting messy! Both the masks and the large models will be used next week… check back here to find out how we use them in our inquiries!
動物について歌を歌うだけでなく、同じ動物をテーマにしたクラフトにも取り組みました！まずは森の動物のお面作りです。子どもたちは、自分が一番好きな動物を一つ選び、お面を作りました。今回は、長野の森で見られる鹿、熊、カモシカ、イノシシなどの動物に注目しました。また、農場の動物の大きな模型も作りました！一人ひとりが外で模型に色を塗り、汚れることを気にせず、思いきり楽しみながら制作しました。作ったお面と大きな動物の模型は、来週の探究活動でも活用する予定です。どのように探究につながっていくのか、ぜひ来週の様子も楽しみにしていてください！
In September, we will be holding the Shimauchi Campus Sports Festival! Looking towards that, we have been practicing how to run fast in a race. We have been practicing in the gym, as well as outside in a beautiful park in Azumino. Everyone is really getting used to how to follow the track, and give it their best. But there won’t just be races at the Sports Festival, we will perform a dance too!! It is connected to our inquiry theme of animals, and also to the theme of the Sports Festival which is “Community Helpers”. Can you guess what helpers we are going to be in the dance?
島内キャンパスのスポーツフェスティバルにむけてかけっこの練習をしています。体育館だけでなく、安曇野の素敵な公園にも出かけて、外でも練習しました。少しずつコースに沿って走ることにも慣れ、一人ひとりが最後まで力いっぱい走れるようになってきました。スポーツフェスティバルで行うのは、かけっこだけではありません。ダンスも披露します！今回のダンスは、今探究している「動物」と、スポーツフェスティバルのテーマである「Community Helpers（地域を支える人々）」の両方につながっています。さて、私たちはダンスの中で、どんなCommunity Helperになるのでしょう？ぜひ想像してみてください！
Finally, we have also be working nicely on our fine motor and literacy skills through practicing writing the alphabet. Each student goes at their own pace and can choose whether they use a pencil, crayon, or even a whiteboard marker. Students can also choose which letters they would like to write. Even at a young age, we want to encourage students to have agency, and take ownership over their learning.
最後に、アルファベットを書く練習を通して、微細運動（Fine Motor）や文字への興味・学びにも楽しく取り組んでいます。一人ひとりが自分のペースで進められるようにし、鉛筆、クレヨン、ホワイトボードマーカーなど、好きな道具を自分で選ぶことができます。また、どの文字を書いてみたいかも、自分で選んでいます。まだ小さな子どもたちですが、こうした活動を通して、自分で選び、自分の学びに主体的に関わる力（Agency）を大切に育てていきたいと考えています。
