Sweet Potatoes and Celebration Guessing! 🍠🎃 SV 10/5-9

What a wonderful week we’ve had in Savanna Class! We started the week with a memorable sweet potato harvesting experience at Daiki’s family farm. The children enjoyed digging in the soil, discovering sweet potatoes of different shapes and sizes, and celebrating each find together. A big thank-you to Daiki’s family for this special experience!

サツマイモ掘りとお祝い当てクイズ！🍠🎃 SV 10/5〜9

サバンナクラスでは、今週も素晴らしい一週間を過ごしました！週の初めには、サバンナさんのご家族の畑で、思い出に残るサツマイモ掘りを体験しました。子どもたちは土を掘り、さまざまな形や大きさのサツマイモを見つけることを楽しみ、見つけるたびにみんなで喜びを分かち合いました。このような貴重な体験をさせてくださったご家族に、心より感謝申し上げます！

We also began our Unit 3 inquiry, Celebrations! Through a provocation featuring real objects and pictures related to different celebrations, such as jack-o’-lanterns, Christmas trees, cakes, Halloween treat bags, and osechi (traditional Japanese New Year’s food), the children explored what these items might have in common. They shared their observations, made predictions, and connected the objects to their own experiences. We were delighted to see how many celebrations the children could identify just by looking at the objects and pictures! By the end of the activity, one child successfully guessed our new unit’s central topic, saying, “I think it’s about celebrations because those are the things we use when we celebrate something.” What a wonderful connection!

また、Unit 3「Celebrations（お祝い・祝祭）」の探究も始まりました！ハロウィンのジャック・オー・ランタン、クリスマスツリー、ケーキ、ハロウィンのお菓子を入れるバッグ、おせち料理など、さまざまなお祝いに関する実物や写真を使った導入活動を行い、子どもたちは、それらにどのような共通点があるのかを探りました。

子どもたちは、気づいたことを共有したり、予想を立てたりしながら、それぞれの物を自分たちの経験と結びつけて考えていました。実物や写真を見るだけで、たくさんのお祝いを思い浮かべることができた子どもたちの姿に、私たちも嬉しくなりました！

活動の最後には、一人のサバンナさんが新しいユニットの中心となるテーマを見事に言い当てました。「お祝いするときに使うものだから、お祝いについてだと思う！」という発言がありました。身の回りの物から共通点を見つけ、自分の経験と結びつけて考えることができましたね！

To encourage curiosity and critical thinking, the children participated in our “Notice, Wonder & Think” activity, sharing what they noticed, what they wondered about, and what they thought they already knew about celebrations. We also explored their prior knowledge by sorting celebration picture cards onto a calendar according to when they thought each celebration takes place. As they shared their ideas and predictions, we gained valuable insights into what they already know and what they are curious to discover about celebrations in Japan.

子どもたちの好奇心や感がる考える力を育むために、「Notice, Wonder & Think（気づいたこと・不思議に思ったこと・考えたこと）」という活動を行いました。お祝いについて、気づいたこと、不思議に思ったこと、すでに知っていると思うことを、それぞれ共有しました。

また、子どもたちがこれまでに知っていることを探るため、お祝いの絵カードを使い、それぞれのお祝いがいつ行われると思うかを考えながら、カレンダーに分類していきました。自分の考えや予想を伝え合う中で、日本のお祝いについて、子どもたちがすでに知っていることや、これからもっと知りたいと思っていることを知ることができました。

The Savanna students got creative as they made their own jack-o’-lanterns in preparation for our Halloween party! They carefully cut orange paper strips and created eyes, noses, and mouths to give their pumpkins unique expressions. Through this hands-on activity, the children practiced their scissor skills, creativity, and fine motor coordination. We loved seeing their different designs come to life! 🧡👻

ハロウィンパーティーに向けて、サバンナさんたちはオリジナルのジャック・オー・ランタン作りに取り組みました！オレンジ色の紙を丁寧にハサミで切り、目や鼻、口を作って、それぞれ個性豊かな表情のかぼちゃに仕上げました。

この活動を通して、ハサミを使う力や創造力、指先を細かく動かす力を育むことができました。一人ひとりの工夫が詰まった、さまざまな表情のジャック・オー・ランタンが完成し、私たちも嬉しく思いました！🧡👻

To wrap up the week, we enjoyed a fun visit to the park with our RF friends, playing on the play structures and enjoying exciting games of tag together. Back in the classroom, we watched stories about different celebrations and shared ideas for our upcoming Winter Show. The children enthusiastically contributed their thoughts, listened to one another, and worked together to come up with a wonderful idea! 🤫✨ We’ll keep it a secret for now!

週の締めくくりには、レインフォレストクラスのお友だちと一緒に公園へ出かけました！遊具で遊んだり、みんなで鬼ごっこを楽しんだりと、楽しい時間を過ごしました。

教室に戻ってからは、さまざまなお祝いに関するお話を映像で楽しみ、これから迎えるウィンターショーについてもアイデアを出し合いました。子どもたちは、思いついたことを積極的に伝え合い、お友だちの意見にも耳を傾けながら、みんなで素敵なアイデアを考えることができました！🤫✨
