This week, our Unit of Inquiry was all about putting teamwork into action as we began an exciting project connected to our Sports Festival. The students are working in teams to design and create their own obstacle. Throughout the week, they had many opportunities to practice sharing ideas, listening to others, making decisions, and working towards a common goal.
Getting Inspired
We started by looking at many different pictures of obstacles to help the students get inspired. In their teams, they talked about what they noticed and which ideas they liked. Rather than choosing an obstacle straight away, the students collected different ideas and added them to their team idea boards. This gave everyone a chance to contribute and helped the teams see the many different possibilities they could explore.
今週のUnit of Inquiry（UOI）では、スポーツフェスティバルにつながる楽しいプロジェクトを通して、チームワークを実際に使うことに挑戦しました。子どもたちはチームに分かれ、自分たちの障害物をデザインして作っています。その中で、アイデアを伝えること、友だちの話を聞くこと、みんなで決めること、そして同じ目標に向かって協力することを練習しています。
まずは、いろいろな障害物の写真を見て、アイデアを集めるところから始めました。チームで「どんなところが面白そう？」「どのアイデアが好き？」と話しながら、気に入ったものをチームのアイデアボードに集めました。すぐに一つに決めるのではなく、まずはみんなが自分の考えを出し合うことを大切にしました。
Making a Decision Together
The next challenge was a very important part of teamwork: How can we make a decision when everyone has different ideas? Each team looked carefully at everything on their idea board. The students shared what they wanted to make, listened to their teammates, and discussed how different ideas could work together.
Their goal was not simply to choose one person’s idea. They had to find something that everyone on the team could agree on. This gave the students a meaningful opportunity to practice being open-minded and to see that sometimes our final idea can include a little bit of everyone’s thinking.
次のチャレンジは、チームワークでとても大切な「みんなの考えが違うとき、どうやって一つに決める？」ということでした。各チームでアイデアボードをじっくり見ながら、自分の考えを伝えたり、友だちの話を聞いたり、一緒に相談したりしました。
一人のアイデアをそのまま選ぶのではなく、チームのみんなが納得できるアイデアを見つけることが目標です。友だちの考えを受け入れながら、いろいろなアイデアを組み合わせることで、みんなの思いが入ったものを作ることができました。
Turning Our Ideas into Something Real
By the end of the week, it was finally time to start designing and building the first version of the obstacles! After spending time gathering ideas and making decisions together, the students were excited to see their plans begin to take shape.
Importantly, this is only our first version. As part of the project, the teams will test their obstacles, receive feedback, talk about what worked and what could be better, and make improvements. The students are especially looking forward to showing their work to their parents and hearing their ideas!
週の後半には、いよいよ自分たちで考えた障害物の最初のバージョンをデザインして作り始めました！ これまでにたくさんのアイデアを集め、チームで話し合って決めてきたことが、少しずつ形になっていきました。
でも、これはまだ最初のバージョンです。これから実際に試したり、フィードバックをもらったりしながら、「うまくいったところ」や「もっと良くできるところ」をチームで考え、少しずつ改善していきます。子どもたちは、お家の方に自分たちのアイデアを見てもらい、意見を聞くこともとても楽しみにしています！
This project is giving the students a chance to experience our Central Idea, “Teamwork enables people to achieve common goals,” in a very real way. Instead of only talking about teamwork, they are learning what it feels like to listen, compromise, make decisions, and create something together. We are excited to see how their obstacles continue to develop!
このプロジェクトを通して、子どもたちはCentral Ideaである**「チームワークによって、人々は共通の目標を達成することができる」**ということを実際に体験しています。チームワークについて話すだけではなく、友だちの話を聞くこと、譲り合うこと、みんなで決めること、そして一緒に何かを作り上げることを学んでいます。これから障害物がどのように変化し、完成に近づいていくのか楽しみです！
