Grade 4 Week 2

Our second week of Summer School built on the friendships, confidence, and creativity that had already started to grow in Week 1. While some familiar activities returned, this week the students took far more ownership, running games themselves, introducing new rules, and adapting activities with their own creative twists. It was wonderful to see them becoming leaders, problem-solvers, and supportive teammates.

Our main theme for the week was Comic Books, with a focus on creating memorable characters and exciting stories. Students explored what makes a great hero or villain, designed their own original comic book characters, and developed imaginative storylines full of action, humour, and unexpected plot twists. They also created their own games inspired by their characters, showing fantastic creativity and teamwork as they tested and improved each other’s ideas.

One of the highlights of the week was our Claymation Project. Working in small groups, students designed characters from modelling clay, built simple sets, and learned how stop-motion animation works. Creating a smooth animation required patience, communication, and careful planning, and everyone was proud to see their finished movies come to life.

Day 3 brought an exciting trip to Alps Park, where students enjoyed a day filled with adventure and exploration. They hiked through the beautiful park, raced down the famous roller slides, and challenged themselves on the adventure assault course. There were smiles, laughter, and plenty of encouragement as students worked together to tackle obstacles and enjoy the outdoor environment.

The warm weather also meant plenty of opportunities for outdoor water activities, helping everyone cool off while enjoying fun team games. Whether splashing, laughing, or working together in challenges, students showed excellent cooperation and sportsmanship throughout the week.

To finish our Comic Book unit, we held our very own Comic-Con Exhibition. Students proudly displayed their comic books, original characters, artwork, games, and Claymation films. It was fantastic to see everyone confidently sharing their ideas, celebrating each other’s work, and reflecting on how much they had achieved over the week.

As our Summer School came to an end, we looked back on two weeks filled with imagination, teamwork, resilience, and laughter. We are incredibly proud of how the students supported one another, embraced new challenges, and grew as creative, confident learners. Thank you to all of our students and staff for making this year’s Summer School such a memorable experience. We hope everyone has a wonderful, relaxing remainder of the summer holiday, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

Grades 5, 6 and 7 Week 2

The second week at Grades 5, 6 and 7 was even more fun than the first! Our Monday started off with an exciting teamwork challenge, and continued with another round of outdoor activities in the afternoon. The sun and the heat couldn’t stop the student from enjoying playing together, and the peak of the day was the somen slider! Catching the tasty somen, tomatoes, and jelly was the best possible refreshment!

On Tuesday, the students talked about their favorite story, movie, or game villains, compared them to the heroes they inquired into the previous week, and created some villains on their own. In the afternoon, we saw a stop-motion movie “Paranorman” and discussed how this movie came to be behind the scenes. This week in the afternoon, the students participated in an animation workshop with the school’s associate, Mr. Howard. They started of by creating their own movable characters out of wire and colorful clay, building the set designs for their movie out of papercraft, taking photos of different scenes they wanted to show and, finally, connecting the photos into their own animated movie.

On Wednesday, we inquired into photography and did a fun scavenger hunt/photography session around the school. We chose the best photographs to showcase at Friday’s exhibition.

Thursday was the day to prepare for the exhibition. The students discussed the required elements of a movie poster and designed the posters for their own animated movie they were creating this week. In the afternoon, we took a ride to the local park. It was very hot, but the lunch picnic under the trees was relaxing and long, long slide was super exciting!

On Friday, it was finally time for this week’s exhibition! The students presented their work from the entire week, and walked around other classes’ exhibits to check out their work. We were also able to finally see the movie everyone created together. The creativity and collaboration behind it left everyone amazed. Please find the movie below, where you can see the lovely work for yourself. In the afternoon, we once more enjoyed a dip in the pool with all our friends, swimming, splashing, laughing.

We said goodbye to all the new friends we met in the past two weeks on Friday afternoon. Reflecting on the Summer school, the students mentioned all the fun times they had, and the teachers reflected on the creativity, teamwork and outside-of-the-box thinking showcased. Have an amazing summer holidays everyone and we hope to see you again next year!
