Teamwork, Skills, and The Lion King! – Milky Way – October 12th–16th

Dear Wonderful Milky Way Families,

This week, we introduced the story for our upcoming Winter Show! The learners were excited to discover that their much-loved The Lion King will become a special Milky Way version. The story will feature the IB Learner Profile attributes they are familiar with, along with the skills they practise in their daily learning. Many learners already have their favourite characters in mind! However, we will work together as a class to decide on the roles, listening to one another and sharing ideas along the way. We look forward to seeing them use their teamwork skills to make the preparation process fun, positive, and full of wonderful learning experiences.

We also introduced a new way to reflect on and track our skills. During Unit 2, learners chose a skill they wanted to practise each morning and shared at the end of the day how and when they had used it. For Unit 3, we are using a weekly checklist. After afternoon snack, learners check the skills they practised that day. On Fridays, they reflect on the skill they are most proud of and choose a skill they would like to work on the following week. To help everyone understand the different skills more deeply, we also explored and explained them in Japanese during our Japanese inquiry time. It has been wonderful to see the learners becoming more aware of their own learning and finding opportunities to put their skills into practice!

Meanwhile, our Milky Way learners are still very enthusiastic about skipping rope! They have been working hard to improve their skills and are steadily completing more and more challenges on their skipping rope cards. Their determination and excitement are wonderful to see!

In our Unit of Inquiry (UOI), we explored dioramas and how they can be used to tell stories. After watching videos to discover different ways of presenting a story through a diorama, the learners worked in groups to choose their theme and characters. Teamwork is certainly one of their strengths! They listened to one another’s ideas, shared their opinions, and continued discussing until everyone felt happy with their group’s decisions. We are excited to see how they will bring their ideas to life and use their creativity to tell their stories.

Our classroom has also been buzzing with excitement during Show and Tell! The learners have enjoyed sharing their special items and talking about why they are meaningful to them. It is a wonderful opportunity to practise their communication skills, speak confidently in front of their friends, and learn more about one another. We love seeing the curiosity and interest their friends show as they listen, ask questions, and discover something new.

During tennis, the learners have been practising hitting the ball with their rackets. They are developing their hand-eye coordination while learning to control the racket and make contact with the ball. Each practice is a chance to build confidence, persistence, and new physical skills!

At our workstations, we were introduced to telling time on a clock. The learners explored how to read the clock and began developing their understanding of time. We will continue to practise through hands-on activities and opportunities to connect this learning with our daily routines.

It has been another wonderful week filled with creativity, collaboration, and opportunities to grow. We are proud of the way our Milky Way learners are sharing ideas, practising new skills, and learning together as a team. We look forward to another exciting week of discoveries and learning!

Warm regards,
Milky Way Team
