CANYON: WE KEEP TRYING OUR BEST:AUGUST 17TH TO AUGUST 21ST!

After returning from the Obon break, the learners appeared happy and refreshed. It was lovely seeing them settling back into school with joy and catching up with their friends.

Our Phonics lesson is gradually evolving, and we have now reached the letter, L and its sound /l/. The learners sang the Jolly Phonics song for L and enjoyed doing the accompanying action of pretending to hold and lick a lollipop. They loved it so much that they kept singing the song throughout the week. We also explored words beginning with the /l/ sound, and they excitedly repeated words such as “l-l-lion,” “l-l-lemon,” and “l-l-look.” They then proceeded to make an L with some playdough.EveryoneEveryone felt happy.

This week, we also had an earthquake drill shortly after naptime. When the siren rang, the children calmly covered themselves with their blankets and waited until the drill was over. They then put on their shoes, lined up, and walked to the entrance, where we gathered to review what is expected of them during an earthquake. The children actively participated by sharing important safety rules, saying, “Don’t push,” “Don’t rush,” “Don’t talk,” and “Don’t go back.” It was encouraging to see that the learners are gradually developing an understanding of how to stay safe and respond appropriately during such emergencies.

Another interesting happening this week was our activity on number sequencing from 1 to 10. During this activity, the children were eager to take turns arranging the numbers in the correct order. Whenever a child made a mistake, the others were quick to notice and kindly draw their attention to it. They showed great open-mindedness by listening to their friends’ ideas and accepting corrections, especially when they used the number line on the wall to check and confirm the correct sequence.

Oh, let’s not forget how exciting our shape name review was. The children had their eyes wide open when they saw the colorful shape flashcards. They were quick to say them namely: heart, square, star, rectangle, triangle and circle. We tried to make these shapes with our fingers. When the shape of heart was made, some students said , “caring.” How well they try to link one thing to another! You should have been there to see.

I must say the children are proving more and more to be inquirers. Almost every child brought something pertaining to animals to show and tell and tell. They tried as much as possible to make sentences to talk about their thing. We heard statements like Mummy gave it to me. I get by myself, This is book, This is camel. I go to farm. When they were done saying about three things about their show-and-tell stuff, they said, “any question” to welcome questions from their friends. They responded to questions such as “How do you play?“, “Why did you bring it?” “How did you bring it?” “Where did you buy it?” “Who gave it to you?” You should have been there to see.

We hope to have a nice weekend and get fully ready to unpack the beautiful learnings next week brings!
