This week, the Rainforest class continued exploring our second Line of Inquiry: How communication and conflict affect teamwork. Through fun and meaningful experiences, the children discovered how the way we speak, listen, and share ideas can affect a team’s ability to achieve a common goal.

During our Pass the Message Challenge, each team had to pass the same message from one person to another until it reached the final teammate. It sounded simple, but it was much more challenging than expected! The children were very excited, and it took four attempts before one team finally passed the message correctly and achieved the goal.

今週、Rainforestクラスでは、2つ目の探究の流れ（Line of Inquiry）である 「コミュニケーションと対立がチームワークにどのような影響を与えるのか」 について、さらに探究を深めました。楽しく、実際に体験できる活動を通して、子どもたちは「話すこと」「聞くこと」「考えを伝え合うこと」が、チームで共通の目標を達成するためにどのような影響を与えるのかを考えました。

「Pass the Message Challenge（伝言ゲーム）」 では、最初の人から最後の人まで、同じメッセージを順番に伝えていきました。一見簡単そうに見えますが、実際にやってみるとなかなか難しいチャレンジ！子どもたちは大盛り上がりで挑戦し、なんと4回目のチャレンジで、ようやく一つのチームが正しいメッセージを最後まで伝え、目標を達成することができました。

Through reflection, the children began identifying what made communication successful or difficult. One student noticed, “Someone was not listening,” while the other explained, “We use small voices, so it’s confusing.” One suggested, “The first person speaks clearly and the next person should listen carefully.” The children realized that both the speaker and the listener have an important responsibility. They concluded, “Communication is important,” and added, “Clear voice is important.”

振り返りでは、子どもたち自身が、コミュニケーションがうまくいった理由、難しかった理由について考えました。「○○が聞いていなかった」、 「小さい声で話すと分かりにくい」 と気づく子がいました。また、「最初の人がはっきり話して、次の人がよく聞くことが大切」 と考える子もいました。この経験から、話す人だけではなく、聞く人にも大切な役割があることに気づいていきました。最後には 「コミュニケーションは大切」、「はっきりとした声が大切」 という言葉も聞かれました。

Our exploration of teamwork continued during our special Closing Circle Open Day. We were delighted to welcome our Rainforest mommies, who joined us to experience part of their children’s afternoon routine, including snack time and a Japanese lesson in the classroom.

チームワークについての探究は、特別なClosing Circle Open Day でも続きました。Rainforestクラスのお母さんたちをお迎えし、おやつの時間や日本語レッスンなど、普段の午後のクラスの様子をご覧いただきました。

Although the lesson was conducted in Japanese, teamwork remained at the heart of the experience. The children teamed up with their moms for a fun Rock-Paper-Scissors challenge against the teacher. There was a twist: every time a team lost, they had to fold their newspaper smaller and smaller while finding a way for both mom and child to stay on it!

日本語のレッスンではありましたが、ここでもテーマはやはり 「チームワーク」！子どもたちはお母さんとチームになり、先生とのじゃんけんゲームに挑戦しました。ただし、このゲームにはちょっとした仕掛けがありました。先生に負けるたびに、チームが立っている新聞紙をどんどん小さく折りたたんでいかなければなりません！

Laughter filled the classroom as the teams communicated, planned, adjusted their strategies, and worked together to stay on their shrinking newspapers. It was wonderful to see our children applying what they have been discovering about teamwork beyond our regular inquiry lessons and, this time, with their moms as their teammates.

新聞紙が小さくなるにつれて、どうすれば二人とも新聞紙の上に立ち続けられるのか、お母さんと子どもたちは話し合い、工夫しながら作戦を考えました。教室にはたくさんの笑い声があふれ、子どもたちがこれまで学んできた コミュニケーション、協力、そしてチームワーク を、お母さんと一緒に実践する素敵な時間となりました

Whether passing a message to a friend or balancing on a tiny piece of newspaper with Mom, the children are discovering through experience that good communication helps a team work together and move closer to achieving a common goal.

友だちに正しくメッセージを伝えるときも、お母さんと小さな新聞紙の上に一緒に立つときも、子どもたちは実際の経験を通して、「良いコミュニケーションは、チームが協力し、共通の目標に近づくための大切な力になる」 ことを少しずつ発見しています。
