G5- The importance of the Environment in our culture

The adventures of G5 continues as we are wrapping up our final line of inquiry, which is “How the environment affects how people live and what their lives are like.” For example, how is the environment different in Okinawa and Nagano? Mountains! Forest! Okinawa is surrounded by ocean! Nagano’s famous for its delicious apples! The answers were amazing.

When I asked, how is the environment different in Canada and Japan? We had a bit of a hiccup. Canada is COLDER, it’s freezing in the winter but because of the weather, Canadians are able to build their homes to withstand up to -40 degrees weather but in Japan, people build their homes to deal with the brutal Japanese heat during summer, which is why in the winter, older Japanese homes are very cold. The conversation turned more lively when we started talking about natural disasters in Japan, especially when that following weekend Azumino and Matsumoto had a blackout caused by rain. The students were able to create a small narrative based off their personal experience with weather.

Now we are finishing the last leg of our UOI 1. Even though there was an intended deadline, that doesn’t mean its a set official date to stop out UOI learning. Sometimes, our learning takes more time than others and that is what happened with G5. As their homeroom teacher, I am very excited to begin exploring science and technology!

Previously, we spent a period in G4 class as their shared their learning experience of their UOI, we got to participate in stations that consist of a puppet show, a slideshow and a video. It was very amusing! In PE, we played volleyball. There are a few of us who need a bit more practice but we were so happy to get news that the school purchased more volleyballs so we can work in pairs! Now we will begin exploring tag rugby at the gym!

We also have exciting news about computers! We added an extra period on Monday’s for more computer time, meaning eventually, G5 will begin to incorporate their computer learning into out third unit! For now, they are learning how to work Godot after spending a few classes making their home, island and cute ghosts. I even saw a minion theme happening with one of the students!

Here are a few photos of our model making!

Until next time,

G5- Miss
