G5’s exploration into science and technology is nearing the end of their unit! Their central idea is “Science and Technological advances help us understand and improve the world around us.”

exploring science. We did the naked egg experiment, which required vinegar, eggs and food coloring. We used the science method to begin asking some question, and exploring our hypothesis. We wondered what would happen if we mixed vinegar and the egg, a lot of students thought the eggs would explode, or a bird would be born. Unfortunately, we used the wrong type of vinegar and the experiment failed. Which is a learning experience of itself. Afterwards, I purchased proper vinegar and after waiting two days and dealing with a smelly classroom, we discovered that the egg shell dissolved because of the vinegar’s acid!

After all the fun of experiments, we began focusing fully and 100% on the upcoming Inquiry Fair! Using the science method as a foundation of our science inquiry, the students each choose their own research theme. Many changed after awhile but so far we have 1) clean water conservation and salt water 2) model boats, 3) testing how clean the air is around the school, 4) types of windmill blades, 4) and solar energy by creating a solar oven and finally, 5) creating biodegradable plastic and comparing how fast is breaks down to other plastics created from toxic chemicals.

The classroom was beautiful chaos. We were busy cutting, gluing, putting together slideshows and posters while also connecting it to our central idea. At the same time, G6-7 and G4 were kind enough to welcome G5 into their class to ask for feedback on how they can create a stronger inquiry fair rotation. We provided feedback by sharing 2 glows and 1 grow, (2 positive things and 1 thing to improve). Now tomorrow is our turn! There are so many exciting things happening and I’m excited to share it next time.
