ISN Summer School – Grade 4

Week 1, Days 1~3

A Great Start

Grade 4 Summer School got off to a fantastic start! We began the week with a menu of activities, giving students the opportunity to choose how they wanted to spend their time. This encouraged student agency, as they explored different activities, discovered what they enjoyed, and adapted them by adding their own creative ideas.

4年生のサマースクールは素晴らしいスタートを切りました！週の始めには、さまざまな活動を自由に選べるアクティビティメニューを用意しました。子どもたちは自分で活動を選び、自分に合った楽しみ方を見つけながら、それぞれのアイデアを加えて活動を工夫しました。自分で選び、自分らしく学ぶ「主体性」がたくさん見られた一週間の始まりでした。

Building Friendships

One of the highlights of the week was seeing students choose activities that encouraged teamwork and cooperation. As they played together, they deepened existing friendships, welcomed others into their games, and created a positive and inclusive atmosphere. One group even designed and set up a four-square court in the classroom, showing great initiative and problem-solving skills.

友情を深める

子どもたちは自然と協力し合える活動を選び、仲間との時間を楽しみました。一緒に遊ぶ中で友達との絆を深め、新しい仲間も積極的にゲームへ招き入れ、温かく協力的な雰囲気を作っていました。あるグループは教室にフォースクエアコートを自分たちで設計・設置し、主体性や問題解決力を発揮していました。

Outdoor Adventures

Students enjoyed plenty of time outdoors throughout the week. They challenged themselves on the slackline, relaxed in the hammocks, and visited the park where they invented their own games, created rules together, and made sure everyone could join in.

アウトドア・アドベンチャー

子どもたちは毎日たくさんの時間を外で過ごしました。スラックラインに挑戦したり、ハンモックでリラックスしたり、公園では自分たちでルールを考えたオリジナルゲームを作って遊びました。みんなが楽しめるように工夫する姿も多く見られました。

With the summer heat, we also made the most of some exciting water activities. Students cooled off on the water slide, enjoyed the fun tradition of nagashi somen, and designed and built their own bamboo water shooters, experimenting with different designs before testing them outside. These activities combined creativity, teamwork, and plenty of laughter.

暑い夏ならではの水遊びも大人気でした。ウォータースライダーで涼んだり、日本の夏の風物詩である流しそうめんを楽しんだり、自分たちでデザインした竹の水鉄砲を作って外で試したりしました。創造力や協力する力を育みながら、たくさんの笑顔があふれる時間となりました。

Creativity Through Technology

A programming workshop and a game-making workshop inspired students to think creatively. They learned the basics of coding and game design before putting their own unique spin on their projects. Rather than simply following instructions, students experimented, modified ideas, and created something that reflected their own imagination and interests.

プログラミングとゲーム制作のワークショップでは、子どもたちは創造的に考えることに挑戦しました。基本的なプログラミングやゲームデザインを学んだあと、自分だけのアイデアを加え、オリジナル作品へと発展させました。決められた手順をそのまま行うだけでなく、試行錯誤を重ねながら、自分らしい作品づくりを楽しみました。

Mystery Design Challenge

Students put their creativity and teamwork to the test with our Mystery Design Challenge. Each team received a mystery box filled with a variety of materials and had one important rule: they could only use the items inside the box. No extra materials were allowed!

Using the design thinking process, students first explored the materials, discussed ideas, and identified a problem they wanted to solve. They sketched, built, tested, and improved their designs as they worked together.

At the end of the challenge, each team presented their invention by answering three key questions:

• What is it?
• Who is it for?
• How does it help?
• ミステリー・デザイン・チャレンジ
• 子どもたちはミステリー・デザイン・チャレンジで創造力とチームワークを発揮しました。それぞれのチームにはさまざまな材料が入った「ミステリーボックス」が配られ、箱の中の材料だけを使うというルールで作品づくりに挑戦しました。
• デザイン思考（Design Thinking）のプロセスを使い、まず材料をよく観察し、アイデアを出し合い、「どんな困りごとを解決するのか」を考えました。その後、設計・制作・テスト・改善を繰り返しながら、チームで協力して作品を完成させました。
• 最後には、次の3つの質問に答えながら、自分たちの作品を発表しました。
• これは何ですか？
• 誰のためのものですか？
• どのように役立ちますか？

The challenge encouraged students to think creatively, communicate their ideas clearly, and see that there is often more than one solution to a problem. It was exciting to see how the same types of materials became completely different inventions, each reflecting the imagination and unique thinking of its team.

同じような材料でも、それぞれのチームが全く違うアイデアを形にしていたことが印象的でした。この活動を通して、創造的に考える力や伝える力、そして一つの問題にはさまざまな解決方法があることを学びました。

Day Four – Thinking and Reflecting

As the week continued, students began preparing for Friday’s exhibition by planning how they would share their learning with others. In the afternoon, students enjoyed watching a movie of their choice. They didn’t just watch for entertainment—they practised thinking critically by discussing the plot, characters, and important messages, leading to some thoughtful and lively conversations.

Day Five – Sharing Our Learning

The week finished with preparations for our Summer School Exhibition. Students created display boards and organised presentations showcasing their favourite activities, projects, and learning from the week. They proudly hosted hands-on activities for visiting students, sharing their creativity, teamwork, and enthusiasm with others. It was a wonderful way to celebrate an exciting first week of Summer School!

5日目 － 学びを発信する

最終日は、サマースクール展示会に向けた準備を行いました。子どもたちは、一週間の活動や学び、お気に入りのプロジェクトを紹介する展示ボードを作成し、発表の準備を進めました。

展示会では、自分たちが楽しんだアクティビティを来場した子どもたちにも体験してもらい、ホストとして活動を紹介しました。自分たちの学びやアイデアを自信を持って伝える姿がとても印象的で、充実したサマースクール第1週を締めくくる素晴らしい機会となりました。

Grades 5, 6 and 7

Day One

Grades 5, 6 and 7 were very excited to have the usually separate classes combined for the purposes of the Summer School! The students spend time with friends who they usually don’t take lessons with, and welcomed a large number of students from outside of ISN, coming in from Matsumoto, other cities in Nagano prefecture, and Tokyo.

サマースクールでは、普段は別々に学んでいる5・6・7年生が合同クラスになり、子どもたちはとても喜んでいました！普段は一緒に授業を受ける機会のない友達とも時間を過ごすことができました。また、松本市内をはじめ、長野県内の他の地域や東京から参加した多くのISN外部生も温かく迎えました。

Every morning, the students started their day with a cooperative, teamwork challenge, waking up their brains from the long summer naps. Their first challenge was to work in teams to build a tallest self standing tower, made only of straws and masking tape. A lot of fun and some excellent ideas have come up, with students realizing the importance of building a wide base, and thinking outside of the box. Next up was the first art project of the week: painting our associations to the word “Summer”. The students talked about how art doesn’t have to be realistic, but just an outlet for the artists’ feelings and impressions. In the afternoon, the entire school had a long water play session in the school’s front yard. A big water slide, catching nagashi somen, and throwing water balloons provided some much needed refreshment from the heat.

毎朝、子どもたちは協力して取り組むチームワーク・チャレンジから一日を始め、夏休みモードの頭と体を目覚めさせました。

最初の課題は、ストローとマスキングテープだけを使って、できるだけ高い自立式のタワーをチームで作ることでした。子どもたちは楽しみながら、さまざまな素晴らしいアイデアを出していました。安定させるためには土台を広くすることが大切だと気づいたり、既成概念にとらわれずに考えたりする姿も見られました。

続いて、今週最初のアートプロジェクトとして、「夏」という言葉から連想するものを絵に表しました。アートは必ずしも写実的である必要はなく、アーティストの気持ちや印象を自由に表現する手段でもある、ということについて話し合いました。

午後には、全校で校舎前の庭に集まり、たっぷりと水遊びを楽しみました。大きなウォータースライダー、流しそうめん、そして水風船投げを楽しみ、暑さの中で必要としていた涼しさを存分に味わうことができました。

Day Two

On Tuesday, the students played with clay, thinking about the looks and characteristics of their personal superheroes, and then modeling them. We’ve seen mom and dad heroes, plushie heroes and kitchen utensil heroes, among others. This was done as part of this Summer school’s overarching theme for the first week: Board games, inspired by lessons held on board game design every day by industry professionals. The students got to explore various existing board games and showcase their creativity and fresh ideas through creating their own interesting board (and card games), which were played by their teachers and classmates.

火曜日には、子どもたちは自分だけのスーパーヒーローの姿や特徴を考え、粘土を使って形にしました。「お母さん・お父さんヒーロー」や「ぬいぐるみヒーロー」、「キッチン用品ヒーロー」など、個性豊かなヒーローが数多く誕生しました。

この活動は、サマースクール第1週の全体テーマである「ボードゲーム」の一環として行われました。毎日、業界の専門家によるボードゲームデザインの授業も実施され、子どもたちはさまざまな既存のボードゲームを実際に体験しました。

その後、自分たちの創造力や新鮮なアイデアを生かして、オリジナルのボードゲームやカードゲームを制作しました。完成したゲームは、先生やクラスメートにも遊んでもらい、楽しい時間を過ごしました。

Day Three

Wednesday was the day for crafting the fun bamboo shooters – traditional summertime toys made by sawing two pieces of bamboo and filling them with water. Even the older students had a lot of fun tinkering with their creations, and the smiles on their faces when they got to get their friends wet from head to toe were infectious. The students also worked in teams to create their own jigsaw puzzles, creating a colorful design and then cutting out the pieces. A lot of fun was had with the team competing in who could finish the puzzle the quickest.

水曜日には、夏の伝統的なおもちゃである竹の水鉄砲作りに挑戦しました。竹を2つの部分に切り分け、水を入れて遊ぶおもちゃです。年上の子どもたちも夢中になって自分たちの作品を工夫し、友達を頭から足までびしょ濡れにしたときの楽しそうな笑顔は、周りのみんなにも広がっていきました。

また、チームでオリジナルのジグソーパズル作りにも取り組みました。カラフルな絵を描いた後、それをパズルのピースに切り分けました。完成後には、どのチームが一番早くパズルを完成させられるかを競い、大いに盛り上がりました。

Day Four

Preparations for the week’s big finale – the Summer School Exhibition, have started on Thursday already. The students discussed packaging design and designed boxes for the board and card games they created in their specialized lessons. They were tasked with making their designs colorful and stand out, as well as listing all important information on their games the players might be interested in. A hot, but fun, afternoon was had at the local park. The students had a picnic, took a walk, did sketches of nature, and played at the play castle.

週の締めくくりとなる大イベント「サマースクール作品展」に向けた準備は、木曜日から始まりました。子どもたちはパッケージデザインについて話し合い、専門授業で制作したボードゲームやカードゲームの箱をデザインしました。色鮮やかで人目を引くデザインにすることに加え、遊ぶ人が知りたいと思うゲームの大切な情報をすべて記載することにも取り組みました。

午後には、近くの公園で暑さに負けず楽しい時間を過ごしました。子どもたちはピクニックをしたり、散歩をしたり、自然をスケッチしたり、遊具のお城で遊んだりしました。

Day Five

The week finished with the Exhibition. All classes presented the work they have done this past week for everyone else to observe, interact with, and enjoy. They worked very hard preparing for it, but were so excited to show their ideas, efforts, and creative thinking, as well as play with the games and projects made by other grades. The week was topped off by fun balloon play and a refreshing dip at the local pool. Please join us next week as well for week two of ISN Summer School 2026!

今週は、作品展で締めくくられました。各クラスがこの1週間で取り組んだ作品や活動を発表し、他のクラスの子どもたちが見たり、実際に触れたり、楽しんだりできる機会となりました。

子どもたちは作品展に向けて一生懸命準備を進め、自分たちのアイデアや努力、創造的な考えを紹介できることをとても楽しみにしていました。また、他学年が制作したゲームや作品で遊ぶことも大いに楽しみました。

最後には、風船を使った遊びや、近くのプールでの水遊びを楽しみ、充実した1週間を締めくくりました。2026年度ISNサマースクール第2週にも、ぜひご参加ください！
