This week, the students in Shooting Star have been building a small creature inquiry kit together for the UOI! In order to inquire they need the right tools. So, they have made colorful nets for catching small creatures, magnifying glasses and collection jars. Now, they can catch and watch small creatures closely, as well as keep a record of everything they have seen. Now, they have an exciting kit that they can always use to inquire more about living things and small creatures and show that they are knowledgeable.

今週、シューティング・スターの生徒たちは、UOIの一環として、小さな生き物を探究するためのキットをみんなで制作しました！探究活動を行うには適切な道具が必要です。そこで、彼らは生き物を捕まえるためのカラフルな網や、虫眼鏡、観察用の容器を作りました。これで、小さな生き物を捕まえてじっくり観察したり、発見したことを記録したりできるようになりました。生き物や小さな生き物についてさらに探究し、自分たちの知識を活かすための、ワクワクするようなキットが完成したのです。

After that, they studied where these small creatures live, so they would know the best places to find them when they journey outside, whether in the schoolyard, park or further afield. The students also worked in teams to strengthen their communication and collaboration skills by sorting different bugs and animals into the places that they live. They looked closely at different living things to help each other decide if the bugs lived in the soil, logs or in the water. They talked about how the creatures move, like jumping or flying, and what they eat like flowers or wood. During this activity, these discussions helped them to learn something interesting: Some bugs can be found in more than one place, and have many different homes because of how they move or what they need.

その後、彼らは小さな生き物の生息地について学びました。そうすることで、校庭や公園、あるいはもっと遠くへ出かけた際に、どこを探せば生き物に出会えるかが分かるようになるからです。また、生徒たちはチームで協力し、様々な虫や動物をそれぞれの生息地に分類する活動を通じて、コミュニケーション能力や協調性を高めました。彼らは生き物をよく観察し、その虫が土の中に住むのか、倒木の中に住むのか、それとも水の中に住むのかを互いに話し合って決めました。さらに、ジャンプしたり飛んだりといった生き物の動きや、花や木といった食べ物についても話し合いました。この活動中の対話を通じて、興味深い発見もありました。ある種の虫は複数の場所で見られることや、移動の仕方や必要な条件によって、様々な場所を住処にしていることがあると学んだのです。

Next, everyone thought carefully, and picked some creatures that like to live near flowers and trees. They made small crafts of these creatures, like caterpillars, butterflies, worms, grasshoppers and ladybugs, using different craft materials. These colorful crafts now decorate the birthday tree to make it look bright and lively for summer.

次に、みんなでよく考え、花や木の近くに住むのが好きな生き物をいくつか選びました。そして、様々な工作の材料を使って、イモムシ、チョウ、ミミズ、バッタ、テントウムシといった生き物の小さな工作を作りました。こうして出来上がったカラフルな作品は「バースデーツリー」を飾り、夏らしい明るく賑やかな雰囲気を演出しています。

Each day is hotter than the day before, so the Shooting Star students went outside with their friends from Milky Way to cool off in the pool. They had a couple of nice breaks throughout the week from their inquiry activities to help them enjoy the heat.

日ごとに暑さが増していく中、シューティング・スターの生徒たちはミルキー・ウェイクラスの友達と一緒に外へ出て、プールで涼みました。探究活動の合間にこうした楽しい休憩時間を設けることで、暑い季節ならではの楽しみも満喫することができました。
