Our Teamwork Challenge at Nakano Campus
This week, we officially began our new Unit of Inquiry, Teamwork. Our Central Idea for this unit is: “Teamwork enables people to achieve common goals.” Throughout the unit, students will explore how working together, communicating, and supporting one another helps groups accomplish things they could not achieve alone.
To introduce the unit, we travelled to Nakano Campus for a provocation with our Grade 1 and 2 friends. A provocation is a hands-on experience designed to spark curiosity and encourage students to think about the new unit before formal lessons begin. Mixed-age teams were challenged to build the tallest tower using only newspaper. Through the activity, the students experienced firsthand that successful teamwork requires listening, sharing ideas, solving problems together, and encouraging one another. The challenge gave everyone a meaningful experience to reflect on as we begin our inquiry into teamwork.
今週から、新しいUnit of Inquiry「Teamwork（チームワーク）」が始まりました。今回の**Central Idea（中心的な考え）は、「チームワークは、共通の目標を達成する力になる。」**です。このユニットでは、協力すること、コミュニケーションをとること、そして互いに支え合うことが、目標を達成するためにどのように役立つのかを探究していきます。
ユニットの導入として、中野キャンパスで小学1・2年生のお友だちと一緒に**プロボケーション（探究へのきっかけとなる活動）**を行いました。プロボケーションとは、本格的な学習を始める前に、子どもたちの興味や疑問を引き出すための体験活動です。異年齢のチームで新聞紙だけを使って一番高いタワー作りに挑戦し、友だちの話を聞くこと、アイデアを出し合うこと、協力して問題を解決することの大切さを実際に体験することができました。この活動を通して、これから始まる「チームワーク」の探究への良いスタートを切ることができました。
Bug Hunt Adventure
While visiting Nakano Campus, we also enjoyed a bug hunt in the beautiful natural surroundings. We were hoping to find some beetles, but instead we discovered lots of grasshoppers and crickets! The students carefully searched through the grass, worked together to spot insects, and proudly caught several bugs to observe in their bug cases.
The bug hunt encouraged the students to explore nature with curiosity and patience while working together to help one another find insects. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they observed the different creatures and shared their discoveries with their friends.
中野キャンパスでは、自然の中で虫探しも楽しみました。みんなでカブトムシを見つけようと探しましたが、見つかったのはたくさんのバッタやコオロギでした！子どもたちは草むらをよく観察し、友だちと協力しながら虫を見つけ、虫かごに入れて観察することができました。
虫探しを通して、子どもたちは自然への興味や探究心を育むとともに、友だちと協力して活動する楽しさも感じることができました。見つけた虫を嬉しそうに見せ合いながら、たくさんの発見を楽しんでいました。
Creating Our New Teams
Back in the classroom, we continued thinking about teamwork by discussing what makes a good team. The students shared thoughtful ideas such as helping one another, listening carefully, being kind, and never giving up. They then formed their new teams and proudly chose creative team names: Blackhole Lizard, Sparkling Gem, and Chemical Inside Ring. We are excited to see these teams grow as they work together throughout the unit!
教室では、「良いチームとはどんなチームかな？」について話し合いました。子どもたちは、「助け合うこと」「話をよく聞くこと」「やさしくすること」「あきらめないこと」など、たくさんの素敵な意見を出してくれました。
その後、新しいチームを作り、それぞれBlackhole Lizard、Sparkling Gem、Chemical Inside Ringというユニークなチーム名を考えました。これからの探究を通して、それぞれのチームがどのように成長していくのか、とても楽しみです。
A Wonderful Visit to the Library
To finish the week, we enjoyed a visit to the library together with the Shooting Star class. The children listened carefully during story time and enjoyed making a simple craft inspired by the book. We were very proud of the Milky Way students for showing excellent manners, listening respectfully, and setting a wonderful example for their younger friends in Shooting Star. They represented our class beautifully throughout the visit.
週の最後には、Shooting Starクラスのお友だちと一緒に図書館へ行きました。読み聞かせでは静かによく話を聞き、本にちなんだ簡単な工作も楽しみました。
Milky Wayクラスの子どもたちは、公共の場でのマナーをしっかり守り、最後まで落ち着いて行動することができました。また、Shooting Starのお友だちのお手本となる姿もたくさん見られ、先生たちはとても誇りに思いました。素晴らしい図書館訪問となりました。
