Shooting Star students began their week by drawing and coloring fun mystery gifts for Family Day. As part of their Unit of Inquiry on responsibility and the important roles people play in groups, they reflected on what they value most. They thought about the significant influences their families have in their lives and created thoughtful, responsible gifts to express gratitude for the caring and loving connections they share. To continue with the family theme, students also read My Family in Morning Circle, which sparked discussions about how many people live in different families and how family sizes can change. This reading activity encouraged students to think about their own families and understand that every family is unique. In Phonics, our Shooting Star students are building strong reading skills by blending letter sounds together. They listened as the teacher says different words like pink or red, then use letter magnets to piece those words together. Later they did a color by numbers picture to see if they could also read some colors! This hands-on activity helps reinforce their understanding of how sounds form words. Additionally, the students have been reading the story Dad’s Red Tent, which is specially designed using only the letters they have learned so far. This carefully leveled story not only helps them practice their new skills but also builds agency to get them excited about reading on their own.

Finally this week, Shooting Star students practiced important road and car safety skills. As they grow older and prepare to travel to primary school independently, they are learning to be responsible and thoughtful pedestrians. The students are practicing how to be principled and reflective by carefully looking both ways before crossing the street and making safe choices near roads and in cars. Thank you to the community helpers for the lesson. It was a fun and engaging way for the students to practice their confidence and safety skills as they become more independent!
