Learning About Pollution

Over the past two weeks, we have continued our Unit of Inquiry by exploring the different types of pollution: land pollution, water pollution, and air pollution. Through discussions, pictures, and videos, the students learned how pollution can affect our environment and the living things that depend on it.

As we watched the videos together, the students shared their observations and ideas about what causes pollution and how it can be prevented. They began making connections between our earlier learning about the 3Rs and the importance of reducing waste to help protect our planet. It was wonderful to hear the students thinking about how their own actions can make a difference.

この2週間、UOIの学習の中で「土地汚染」「水質汚染」「大気汚染」について探究を続けてきました。話し合いや写真、動画を通して、汚染が環境やそこに暮らす生き物たちにどのような影響を与えるのかを学びました。

動画を見ながら、子どもたちは「なぜ汚染が起こるのか」「どうすれば防げるのか」について自分の考えを共有しました。また、これまで学んできた３R（Reduce・Reuse・Recycle）とのつながりにも気付き始め、ゴミを減らすことが地球を守ることにつながると理解を深めています。自分たちの行動が環境に良い影響を与えられることを考える姿がたくさん見られました。

Freddie the Fish

One of the highlights of the week was our “Freddie the Fish” activity. At the start of the activity, Freddie lived in a clean and healthy pond. As different pollutants were added to the water, the students observed how Freddie’s habitat became dirtier and less safe for animals.

The activity helped students visualize how water pollution affects not only fish but also many other animals and plants that depend on clean water. The students were surprised by how quickly the water changed and shared thoughtful ideas about how we can help keep rivers, lakes, and oceans clean.

Through this hands-on experience, the students developed a deeper understanding of the impact pollution can have on the environment. The activity encouraged them to think about how their choices can help protect living things and care for the Earth.

今週の活動のハイライトの一つは、「フレディ・ザ・フィッシュ」の活動でした。活動の始めには、フレディがきれいで安全な池に住んでいました。しかし、さまざまな汚染物質が少しずつ加えられていくにつれて、水が汚れ、生き物たちにとって住みにくい環境へと変わっていく様子を観察しました。

この活動を通して、水質汚染は魚だけでなく、きれいな水に依存している多くの動物や植物にも影響を与えることを学びました。子どもたちは、水があっという間に汚れていく様子に驚きながら、「どうしたら川や湖、海をきれいに保てるかな？」と考えていました。

実際に目で見て体験することで、汚染が環境に与える影響についてより深く理解することができました。また、自分たちの選択や行動が生き物や自然を守ることにつながるということを考える良い機会となりました。
