Grade 4 Weekly Learning Update
English
This week, we continued developing our descriptive writing skills by exploring how we can use the five senses to bring descriptions of places to life. Students considered how sensory details, interesting adjectives and powerful verbs can help a reader imagine a place.
We also began our PICTS Sports Cinema group projects based on the short film Girls Move Mountains. The film has prompted some thoughtful questions connected to our current unit, including:
- How does where you are born affect the opportunities you have?
- What actions did the girls and young women take to create new opportunities?
- How do opportunities today compare with those in the past?
Different groups are investigating the factors that influence opportunities, the personal qualities the girls demonstrated, and the challenges they faced. They are also comparing their experiences with life in Nagano. This connects closely with our current inquiry into how geographical, environmental, cultural and historical factors influence the way people live.
Science
In Science, we continued our investigation into how temperature changes throughout the day under different weather conditions. After collecting temperature data during sunny, cloudy and rainy weather, students used their results to create line graphs.
We noticed that the increase in temperature was much more dramatic on a sunny day, with the maximum temperature occurring after midday. We then began thinking like scientists about why this happens.
Students considered how the ground is heated by sunlight and then transfers heat to the air. We also discussed how different surfaces, such as asphalt, can affect temperature, and how wind can move warmer or cooler air around. We explored the idea that the temperature we measure can be influenced by several different factors.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we developed our understanding of line graph vocabulary. Students matched key mathematical terms with their definitions and example sentences, helping them to use more precise mathematical language when describing and analysing graphs.
Swimming
On Friday, students took part in swimming lessons. Some students were feeling trepidatious beforehand, but everyone returned saying how much fun they had!
This led to a valuable discussion about learning new skills. We talked about how everyone starts somewhere — often making mistakes and finding things difficult before they become confident. We considered the importance of being understanding of where other people are on their learning journey, while also staying motivated ourselves when we experience setbacks.
It was wonderful to see students challenge themselves and come away feeling proud of what they had achieved.
A Warm Welcome to Our New Student!
On a final note, we are delighted to welcome a new student to our school from Australia! He has recently moved to the local area with his family, who are big fans of winter sports—so they are certainly in the right place here in Nagano!
Everyone was very excited to welcome him to our school. He is currently getting to know his classmates, learning everyone’s names and making new friends. We look forward to seeing him settle in and become part of our school community.
Let’s all continue to make him feel welcome and help him feel at home!

今週は、五感を使って場所の様子をより生き生きと表現する方法を学び、描写文を書く力をさらに伸ばしました。五感を表す言葉や興味深い形容詞、力強い動詞を使うことで、読み手がその場所を頭の中に思い浮かべられるようになることを考えました。
また、短編映画 Girls Move Mountains を題材にした、PICTS Sports Cinemaのグループプロジェクトにも取り組み始めました。この映画を通して、現在のユニットにつながる次のような問いについて考えています。
- 生まれた場所によって、得られる機会はどのように変わるのでしょうか？
- 少女たちは、新しい機会を生み出すためにどのような行動を起こしたのでしょうか？
- 現在の機会は、過去と比べてどのように変化しているのでしょうか？
それぞれのグループで、機会に影響を与えるさまざまな要因、少女たちが示した人としての強みや資質、そして彼女たちが直面した困難について調べています。また、彼女たちの経験を長野での生活とも比較しています。これは、地理的・環境的・文化的・歴史的な要因が、人々の暮らし方にどのような影響を与えるのかという、現在の探究にも深くつながっています。
理科
理科では、天候によって一日の気温の変化がどのように異なるのかについての調査を続けました。晴れ・曇り・雨の日に気温を測定し、その結果を使って折れ線グラフを作成しました。
晴れの日には気温が大きく上昇し、最高気温は正午を過ぎてから記録されることに気づきました。そこで、「なぜこのような変化が起こるのだろう？」と、科学者のように考え始めました。
太陽の光によって地面が温められ、その熱が空気に伝わることについて考えました。また、アスファルトなど地面の種類によって気温への影響が異なることや、風によって暖かい空気や冷たい空気が移動することについても話し合いました。
私たちが測定する気温は、一つの原因だけではなく、さまざまな要因によって変化することを学びました。
算数
算数では、折れ線グラフに関する用語についての理解を深めました。重要な算数用語とその意味、例文を組み合わせる活動を行い、グラフを説明したり分析したりするときに、より正確な数学的な言葉を使えるよう練習しました。
水泳
金曜日には、水泳の授業がありました。授業の前には少し**不安を感じていた（trepidatious）**子どもたちもいましたが、授業を終えると、みんな「とても楽しかった！」と話していました。
そこから、新しいことを学ぶときに大切なことについて話し合いました。誰もが最初は初心者で、上達するまでには失敗したり、難しいと感じたりすることがあります。自分自身が思うようにできないときにもあきらめずに挑戦すること、そして、一人ひとりの学びの進み方を理解し、お互いに思いやりを持つことの大切さについて考えました。
子どもたちが自分の限界に挑戦し、最後には「自分はこれができるようになった！」と誇らしげな表情を見せてくれたことを、とても嬉しく思います。
新しいお友達を迎えました！
最後に、オーストラリアから新しいお友達が本校に加わりました！ご家族で最近この地域に引っ越してきたそうです。ご家族はウィンタースポーツが大好きとのことで、まさに長野にぴったりのご家族ですね！
みんな、新しいお友達を迎えることをとても楽しみにしていました。今は少しずつクラスメートのことを知り、みんなの名前を覚えたり、新しい友達を作ったりしています。
これから学校生活に慣れ、学校コミュニティの一員として楽しく過ごしていく姿を見るのが楽しみです。
これからもみんなで温かく迎え、安心して「ここが自分の居場所だ」と感じられるようにしていきましょう！
