This week began with some exciting news for our Bug Hotel Project. On Monday, the wooden pallets and crates arrived, and we got lots of them! The students were thrilled to get started. We have begun filling the bug hotel with straw, sticks, wood, and other natural materials to create safe homes for insects and other small creatures.

Everyone has worked together to decorate the top with moss, and students have been enthusiastically searching for sap, roots, and other natural food sources that might attract different insects. It has been a wonderful collaborative experience so far, with students sharing ideas, solving problems together, and taking pride in creating something that will hopefully benefit local wildlife for years to come.

In English, we have been delving deeper into persuasive writing. After learning about the difference between facts and opinions, we were introduced to the OREO structure for organising persuasive arguments:

We explored examples, created posters, and practised writing our own opinions. We then began learning additional persuasive writing techniques, including using adverbials and adjectives to make our writing more emotive and convincing. We were also introduced to rhetorical questions, which we will be learning more about in the coming weeks. Soon, students will be ready to write persuasive speeches and letter s to ask for real changes and improvements they would like to see!

On Friday, the Milky Way class came to visit us. Everyone was excited to spend time together, and it was wonderful to see how much the younger students have grown since last year. Our Grade 4 students did a great job of playing with them, helping them, and making them feel welcome.

The Birdwatching Club also had an exciting week. We visited the stony car park area and were lucky enough to spot a Ringed Plover, which appears to have made its summer home there. Ringed Plovers have a distinctive “pew, pew, pew” call, so if you hear that sound while visiting a stony area—especially along the Chikuma River, where they are known to nest during the summer—keep your eyes open! You might be lucky enough to spot one.

今週は、バグホテルプロジェクトにとって嬉しいニュースから始まりました。月曜日に木製パレットや木箱がたくさん届き、いよいよ本格的に作業を始めることができました。子どもたちは大喜びでした！

現在は、わらや木の枝、木片などの自然素材を使って、虫たちが安心して暮らせる住みかを作っています。また、ホテルの上にはみんなで協力してコケを飾り付けました。さらに、樹液を吸う昆虫のために樹液のある木を探したり、根やその他の食べ物になりそうなものを見つけたりしながら、「どんな虫が来てくれるかな？」と考えています。

このプロジェクトは、子どもたちが協力しながらアイデアを出し合い、問題を解決し、一緒に一つのものを作り上げる素晴らしい経験になっています。地域の生き物たちの役に立つ場所になることを願いながら、みんな誇りを持って取り組んでいます。

英語では、説得文（Persuasive Writing）の学習をさらに進めました。まず事実（Fact）と意見（Opinion）の違いについて学んだ後、説得文の構成である OREO を学びました。

O – Opinion（意見）
R – Reason（理由）
E – Evidence（根拠・証拠）
O – Opinion（意見のまとめ）

子どもたちは例文を見たり、ポスターを作ったりしながら、自分の意見を書く練習をしました。その後、より説得力のある文章にするために、副詞や形容詞を使って感情に訴える表現を学びました。また、「修辞疑問文（Rhetorical Questions）」についても学び始めました。これからさらに学習を進め、実際に自分たちが望む変化や改善について、説得力のあるスピーチや手紙を書く予定です。

金曜日には、Milky Wayクラスが遊びに来てくれました。子どもたちはとても楽しみにしていて、一緒に遊んだりお話をしたりして楽しい時間を過ごしました。昨年と比べると、とても成長した姿が見られ、驚きました。グレード4の子どもたちも優しく接し、良いお兄さん・お姉さんとして関わってくれていました。

また、バードウォッチングクラブも楽しい活動を行いました。石が多い駐車場周辺へ観察に行き、そこで夏を過ごしていると思われる コチドリ（Ringed Plover） を見つけることができました。

コチドリは「ピュー、ピュー、ピュー」という特徴的な鳴き声をします。千曲川のような石の多い場所では夏に巣を作ることが知られているので、そのような場所でこの鳴き声が聞こえたら、ぜひ周りを探してみてください。運が良ければ見つけられるかもしれません！
