環境を守ろう ― 空気汚染と水質汚染を探究しよう（ミルキーウェイ）5月25日〜29日
Warm greetings to our Milky Way families!
This week, we continued exploring our second line of inquiry, How waste affects the environment, and our central idea, People’s choices can help care for the Earth, with a special focus on water and air pollution. The students showed great enthusiasm and curiosity throughout our learning experiences.
We began by learning about water pollution. Students watched an educational video that helped them understand the meaning, causes, effects, and ways to prevent water pollution. During our class discussion, students actively shared their thoughts, ideas, and personal experiences, leading to a meaningful and engaging conversation. To deepen their understanding, students worked collaboratively in groups and prepared presentations on different topics related to water pollution, including littering, garbage in the water, oil spills, and wasting water. It was wonderful to see students confidently share their ideas and work together as communicators and thinkers. After the group activity, students worked independently to demonstrate their understanding by drawing one harmful action that pollutes water and one positive action that helps keep water clean. Students proudly explained their drawings, showing that they are becoming knowledgeable learners. Teachers supported the students by helping them write words related to their drawings, which they carefully copied onto their papers.
Next, we shifted our focus to air pollution. Students watched another educational video, followed by another engaging class discussion. Together, we defined air pollution and explored its causes, effects, and ways to prevent it. We discussed how some causes of air pollution come from nature, while others are caused by people. Some examples of air pollution that we discussed included volcanic eruptions, smoke from factories, wildfires, cars and airplanes, and spray can fumes. Students also learned about the effects of air pollution, such as difficulty breathing, global warming, smog, headaches, coughing, dizziness, and harm to plants and animals. We also explored ways to help prevent air pollution, including using public transportation, planting more trees, walking or riding a bike, saving energy by turning off lights and appliances, and wearing masks when necessary. It was wonderful seeing students ask meaningful and thoughtful questions after our discussions. These questions were added to our “Wonder Wall,” encouraging further inquiry and curiosity.

今週は、探究の2つ目の流れである「ごみが環境に与える影響」、そして中心となる考え「人々の選択は地球を大切にすることにつながる」を引き続き探究し、水質汚染と大気汚染に焦点を当てて学びました。学習の中で、子どもたちは終始、強い興味と好奇心をもって取り組んでいました。
はじめに、水質汚染について学びました。教育用の動画を視聴し、水質汚染の意味、原因、影響、そして防ぐ方法について理解を深めました。クラスディスカッションでは、子どもたちが自分の考えや経験を積極的に共有し、とても深く、実りある話し合いとなりました。さらに理解を深めるため、グループに分かれて協働し、「ポイ捨て」「水の中のごみ」「油流出」「水の無駄遣い」など、水質汚染に関するさまざまなテーマについて発表準備を行いました。自信をもって意見を伝え、協力しながら活動する姿から、「コミュニケーションができる人（Communicator）」「考える人（Thinker）」としての成長が感じられました。
グループ活動の後は、一人ひとりが理解を深めるために、水を汚してしまう行動を1つ、水をきれいに保つ良い行動を1つ選び、絵に描いて表現しました。自分の絵について誇らしげに説明する姿から、「知識のある人（Knowledgeable）」としての姿が見られました。教師は、子どもたちの表現を言葉にするサポートを行い、関連する単語を一緒に考えながら、子どもたちはそれを丁寧に書き写しました。
次に、大気汚染についての学びへと進みました。こちらも動画視聴とクラスディスカッションを行い、大気汚染の意味、原因、影響、そして防ぐ方法について探究しました。大気汚染には自然によるものと、人間の活動によるものがあることを学び、火山の噴火、工場の煙、山火事、車や飛行機、スプレー缶のガスなどの例を挙げて話し合いました。また、大気汚染の影響として、息苦しさ、地球温暖化、スモッグ、頭痛、咳、めまい、植物や動物への悪影響などについても学びました。
さらに、大気汚染を防ぐためにできることとして、公共交通機関を使うこと、木を植えること、歩いたり自転車に乗ったりすること、電気や家電をこまめに消してエネルギーを節約すること、必要に応じてマスクを着用することなどを話し合いました。話し合いの後には、子どもたちからたくさんの質問が出され、それらは「Wonder Wall（ふしぎのかべ）」に追加され、今後の探究へとつながっていきます。
これからも、子どもたちの好奇心と探究心を大切にしながら、地球を守るためにできることを一緒に学んでいきます。今後の学びも、ぜひ楽しみにしていてください。
Japanese inquiry time
日本語の探究では、春の旬の食べ物クイズを通して「旬の食べ物」について学びました。また、「方向（前・後・左・右）」については、ゲームをしながら理解を深めました。
クイズはとても盛り上がり、方向のゲームでは少し戸惑う様子も見られましたが、楽しみながら前後左右を覚える練習をすることができました。
We also had a wonderful and meaningful Reading Time in class. Our focus book was We Are. The students enjoyed listening, reading, and learning together through different reading activities that helped build their confidence and love for reading. First, the teacher read the story aloud to the whole class while the students listened carefully. After that, the students read together with the teacher while pointing their fingers to each word. This helped them follow the text closely and connect spoken words with printed words. Next, the students practiced reading independently. They tried their best to read the words on their own and showed great effort and determination. After individual reading, they paired up with friends and read together. It was wonderful to see students helping one another. Some students asked their friends how to read unfamiliar words and then confidently read them to the teacher. For students who still needed extra support, the teacher provided supplemental learning by helping them master letters and their sounds, which are important foundations for reading development. Step by step, the students are growing in their reading journey.
今週も、クラスでは心温まる、そして学びの多いリーディングタイムを過ごしました。今回のフォーカスブックは『We Are』です。子どもたちはさまざまな読みの活動を通して、一緒に聞き、読み、学ぶことを楽しみながら、読むことへの自信と興味をさらに深めていきました。
まずは、先生がクラス全体に向けて読み聞かせを行い、子どもたちは物語に耳を傾けながら、集中して聞いていました。その後、先生と一緒に声を出して読み、指で一語一語を追いながら読む練習をしました。この活動により、話し言葉と文字とのつながりをしっかりと意識することができました。
次に、子どもたちは一人で読むことにも挑戦しました。自分の力で単語を読もうと一生懸命取り組む姿から、大きな努力と粘り強さが感じられました。個人読みの後は、友だちとペアになって一緒に読む活動を行いました。分からない単語を友だちに聞いたり、教え合ったりしながら、協力して読む姿がとても印象的でした。中には、友だちに聞いて覚えた単語を、自信をもって先生に読んでくれる子もいました。
さらに、もう少しサポートが必要な子どもたちには、先生が文字と音の理解を深める補足指導を行いました。これは、読みの力を育てるための大切な基礎となります。一歩一歩、子どもたちは確実に読書の力を伸ばしています。
これからも、子どもたち一人ひとりのペースを大切にしながら、読む楽しさと自信を育んでいきます。
For our writing lesson, we continued practicing writing CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words on the baseline. Students carefully focused on forming their letters correctly and placing them neatly on the lines. It was wonderful to see their improved writing skills and growing confidence in writing independently. Many students showed better pencil control and correct letter formation. They worked hard to sound out and write simple CVC words while paying attention to neat handwriting.
ライティングのレッスンでは、引き続きCVC（子音・母音・子音）ワードをベースラインの上に書く練習を行いました。子どもたちは、文字の形を正しく書くことや、線の上にきれいに配置することに意識を向けながら、丁寧に取り組んでいました。
一人で書くことへの自信も少しずつ高まり、書く力の成長が感じられる場面がたくさん見られました。鉛筆の操作が上達し、正しい文字形成ができるようになってきた子どもたちも多くいます。音を一つひとつ確認しながら、簡単なCVCワードを書こうと一生懸命努力し、きれいな字で書くことにも意識を向けて取り組んでいました。これからのさらなる成長がとても楽しみです。
Milky Way students had a wonderful time during outside play at the schoolyard. They especially enjoyed observing and exploring the tiny roly-polies with great fascination and curiosity. It was lovely to see the children actively engaged in nature, sharing discoveries with friends, and enjoying their outdoor learning experience together.
ミルキーウェイのみんなは、園庭での外遊びの時間を思いきり楽しみました。特に、ダンゴムシを見つけて観察する活動に夢中になり、目を輝かせながら興味津々で探究していました。
自然の中で積極的に関わり、発見したことを友だちと共有しながら、一緒に屋外での学びを楽しむ姿がとても微笑ましかったです。遊びを通して、好奇心や探究心がさらに育まれている様子が感じられました。
This week, the teachers introduced the Six Thinking Hats to the students for the very first time. The children were excited to explore the different colored hats and learn how each hat represents a different way of thinking. Students tried to identify the color of the hat and share their thoughts based on how that hat “thinks.” Through this activity, students practiced expressing their ideas, listening to others, and thinking in creative and meaningful ways. Some students talked about feelings, while others thought of positive ideas. It was wonderful to see the children confidently participate and enjoy looking at situations from different perspectives.
Next week will be another exciting and meaningful week for our Milky Way students! We will begin a wonderful hands-on learning experience as the students plant cucumber vegetables in the school garden. This activity will help them learn more about nature, responsibility, and how plants grow. We will also have our students’ medical check-up, the Milky Way/Elementary exchange activity, and of course, their much-awaited tennis lesson which they always enjoy and look forward to. On top of all these exciting events, we are also very happy to welcome our families for the School Open Day! The Milky Way students are especially looking forward to this event because they know their parents will be coming to visit their classroom and see their learning in action. We warmly encourage all parents to come and join us so you can see how your children are growing, learning, and developing confidently at school. Your presence means so much to them, and we are excited to share these meaningful moments together.
今週、ミルキーウェイのみんなに「シックス・シンキング・ハッツ（Six Thinking Hats）」を紹介しました。さまざまな色の帽子に興味津々で、それぞれの帽子が「考え方のちがい」を表していることを楽しく学びました。子どもたちは帽子の色を見分け、その帽子がどのように「考える」のかを意識しながら、自分の考えを共有しました。この活動を通して、自分の意見を伝えること、友だちの話を聞くこと、そして創造的で意味のある思考をすることを練習しました。気持ちについて話す子、前向きなアイデアを出す子など、さまざまな視点が見られ、異なる考え方を楽しみながら自信をもって参加する姿がとても素敵でした。
来週も、ミルキーウェイのみんなにとってワクワクする、学びにあふれた一週間となります。園のガーデンできゅうりの苗植えを行い、自然や責任、植物の成長について体験的に学びます。また、健康診断、ミルキーウェイ・レインフォレスト年長クラスとエレメンタリー（小学部）の交流活動、そして子どもたちが毎回楽しみにしているテニスレッスンも予定されています。さらに、スクール・オープン・デーでは、保護者の皆さまをお迎えできることを、私たちもとても楽しみにしています。子どもたちは、ご家族がクラスルームを訪れ、自分たちの学びの様子を見てくださることを心待ちにしています。ワークショップも子どもたちの学びの成長を下にしたものになっていますので、皆様のご参加お待ちしております。
