Leading with Sportsmanship

The Rainforest class has been nothing but busy this week as we prepare for our upcoming Sports Festival! Since this will be their last Sports Festival in preschool, the Rainforest children will also be taking on an exciting responsibility: leading the event.

Being a leader is not an easy task. As the oldest children, they know that their younger friends will be watching them, so we asked an important question:

“During Sports Festival, what do I want to show?”

The children came up with their own goals: “No extra actions,” “Stand nicely in line,” “Speak with a big voice,” and several more. But through our rehearsals, an even more meaningful goal began to emerge.

During one reflection, the children talked about how some friends had cried after losing a game. They understood why—losing can make us feel disappointed or sad—but this led us to wonder: How should we respond when we lose?

We watched a story about a boy who did not win his game but was still praised by his coach and warmly supported by his family. The children noticed that the players continued to encourage one another, hug their teammates, and even help others despite competing against them.

From this, the Rainforest children discovered a new concept: sportsmanship.

They decided that even when they lose, they can still be caring, help others, and clap for the winners. They also discussed how winners can show respect by encouraging the other team and saying things like, “Good game!” and “That was close!”

And so, our biggest goal for Sports Festival is no longer simply to run fast, perform well, or win.

Our goal is to show sportsmanship.

As leaders of this year’s event, the Rainforest children are working hard not only to prepare their performances, but also to model what it means to be respectful, caring, and supportive teammates.

We can’t wait to show you what we’ve been learning. See you at Sports Festival! 🏃‍♀️🏅❤️

「Sports Festival

“That was close!”

Sports Festival
